Dana 60 Front Build
After a year of searching and waiting, I finally found a front Dana 60 when I could afford one. I picked this up today for $800. I have a huge list of parts that will probably take me a year to acquire.
The Parts List: Machine the DRW hubs to SRW Warn Premium Hubs #62672 Ballistic Fab D60 high steer kit (open to suggestions) 4.56 Gears ABR or Spool Powder Coated Chrome Diff Cover Cross Drill/Slotted Rotors Master Overhaul Kit http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...s/P5230041.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...s/IMG_0134.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...s/IMG_0136.jpg |
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Nice!:metal::metal:
If you plan on driving it on the street, go with the ARB. From what I have heard, Ballistic makes a good and inexpensive(compared to others) cross-over/high steer unit. |
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Nice, and you ever get the cooling issue worked out?

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
I would make sure the steering arms you buy eliminate the KinPin Spring. That pesky spring alows for "death wobble" to happen. Not everyone gets death wobble but with the spring eliminated you won't have to worry about it.
Congrats! :mm::chevy::mm: |
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Thanks Burt. Good to know. The ballistic fab arms do eliminate the spring.

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Today I tore down both knuckles. The kingpins look bad to me. Let me know what you think.

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
They look scored to me...what did the poly bushings look like?
|
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
800 bucks for a drw dana 60. wow!
|
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Nother SCORE!!! Picked up slightly used SRW Hubs, used knuckles, new kingpins, new dual calipers set, and other misc. items for the dana 60 for... only $160. Gotta love craigslist. Its funny cause i know the guy through another wheeling buddy of mine. He also has a set of brand new in the box warn premium hubs that he is including in the deal once he finds them. Now I just need gears and a locker, anyone?

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Nice score!

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Is older chevy and ford bolt patterns the same?
|
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Make sure the d60 sw hubs are for lockout hubs. I hear they are different. Something to do with a guide in them or something I think. Trevor

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Ok did some more research and found out that the parts are bought were Ford. Now I have two options. One, use the parts I bought and find ford outer shafts. Two, keep searching for chevy hubs. The only reason I might use the ford parts is I have a dual piston caliper for better braking power and I might have all the parts needed. Still waiting to her back from my buddy to see if he has ford axles laying around. Need some input...what do you think.

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
I'd keep searching for GM stuff. Ford stuff would make you change transfer cases I believe. I think all of the ford stuff was driver drop. Trevor

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
Only the knuckles out are ford. The housing and stuff are Chevy
|
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
The ford stuff will work fine just get a set of shafts. then you can sell the chevy knuckles for a little more $ because they are the ones all the crawlers want.

I never bothered to check so maybe the OEM brake brakets can be used. Or machine the DRW hubs to SRW, I that to but i did most of the hard work before they went to the machine shop. I plasma cut the major parts off then I ground most of the high spots down. That way I would be charged less to have them skim cut them on the lathe to 4 5/8". I dont have them back from the machine shop but heres a fuzzy pic of what they looked like prior to going there. I will plamsa cut some plates that will fit over the hub body and then gets welded to the ears. That will be plenty for what I want to do. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...ys/rear607.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...ys/rear606.jpg Jason. |
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
The only reason I didn't machine my DRW hubs down is because they are in excellent condition. I was told to try and sell them. Originally that is what I planned on doing.

Re: Dana 60 Front Build
You can get brand new SRW hubs from www.gmpartsdirect.com for real cheap. I can find the part # if you want

So here is what I accomplished today.... Finished cleaning and painting everything today. I am awaiting my hubs via us mail. I still need to order my hi-steer arms and locking hubs. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...s/P5290056.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...s/P5290057.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...s/P5290060.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...s/P5290061.jpg |

|
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
wow! is that the going price for a chevy 60 out there? i bought TWO whole m1008 chevys for that, and they already had 4.56 gears. drove one of them home.
|
Re: Dana 60 Front Build
yeah, well things are twice as expensive on the west coast. I can find Dana 60s all day long for $500 or less on the east coast.
