NP205 shift rod

Started to clean my NP205 today and I saw that something was welded to the shift rod.

The transfer case shifts as it should so my question is why is that thing(to the right) welded to the shift rod?

I have two just like that. I think it is so that shift rail doesn't move back in without the other one moving. You see what I mean. If you pushed it from the right side only both would go in. Anyway= I think if GM put it there-leave it there.

Exactly, I’ve seen several 205’s just like that. I think they were early '69 or '70’s with the short shifter rail on the passengers side. Check this out. Scroll down the page and read all about it.

I have a 71 np205 case and it looks just like this with the welded shift rod. It is welded from the factory.

Yes, about your year and older the rails were the same length and they had the funky beatup/welded end. New ones have one longer rail and an offset linkage(not the flat straight one). Do a google for np205 shift rail linkage and you will see the offset linkage with a one longer rail. Bottom line, if you're casing down new rails, make sure you get the correct ones for your linkage... else prepare to modify your linkage. :chevy:
