New truck!!! Build Thread

hey everyone..

This is my first truck, im 19, familiar with cars and what not just haven't gotten around to ever getting a truck. i had a 98 Cherokee 2 door 5 speed red that i lifted 4.5'' and put 34's on, that was sweet till i wrecked it, but anyway im getting this truck here

http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/...psd6e660ae.jpg

its a 1990 Scottsdale with a 4 speed w/overdrive. got the Chevy 350 in it.
about 70k on it
frame is in really nice shape and no real bad body damage minus the D fender

im buyin it off a buddy of mine with these rims
http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/...ps16b19d25.jpg

they have never had anything mounted on them yet

my list of things i gotta do:
  1. tear bed off
  2. replace fuel lines (how hard is that?)
  3. undercoat the puppy
  4. put muffler and side pipe in
  5. fix the tilt problem on the steering wheel
  6. replace D fender and grille and a little bondo :)
  7. get decent tiress
  8. get crack in windshield filled
  9. PAINT!! goin with gunmetal gray i think what do you guys think?

Not bad, what is it, it kinda looks like a 2500 or 3500 with the clearance lights and appears? to have 8 lug wheels? And 4X4 too?

Why are you taking the bed off?

Search here for info on the tilt column, might only need the 3 bolts tightened.

Grey will look good on it.

How much fuel line repair does it need? Depending on whewe it is, it can be easy or a real pain.

Fender and grille shouldn't be much problem.

What transmission is in it? 5 speed manual?

haha ok ya its a 2500, with 8 lugs, 4x4

taking the bed off to rubberize the bottom of the bed and the frame, make it easier to do cab corners and fuel lines and im gonna have to replace all lines

the fender and grille will e easy just bolt on stuff

and ya its a 4 speed w/ overdrive manual

i cant find anything on the tilt problem anywhere.... without touching any levers or anything i can tilt the steering wheel from the like 7 o'clock position to the 3 o'clock position..... the PO took it apart to replace the key/ignition thing and im guessin when he did that he missed a part, any ideas anyone?

Not sure what you mean by "tilt the steering wheel from the like 7 o'clock position to the 3 o'clock position", but a common problem is when people just pull back on the lever and let the wheel slam itself up, the 4 screws that hold the tilt assembly to the column work loose. If thats all it is, get a wheel puller, lock plate tool, remove the wheel, and tighten the screws. IIRC you can do it without removing anything but the wheel. But if parts are missing you'll have to figure it out and fix it, or replace the whole thing with a J/Y unit. If it's the steering itself is that loose, your problem could actually be in the steering gear or linkage, and or pittman arm, tie rod ends, etc. Or any combinationof all the above.

Here's a couple videos etc that might help:

http://www.steeringcolumnservices.co...structions.php

http://www.chevyasylum.com/column/tiltcol.html

There's more out there, some better than others, read anough of them till you understand what you gotta do, take your time, and good luck!

U can buy the lines with the fittings already on both ends at Autowhatever. Bend 'em with a bender, or by hand. Take the coupling off in front of the D/S rear wheel, take it in to get the right fittings on the new line. You can get different lengths, mix & match for what you need.

thanks tennessee! i was under it today and found that the rear cab supports on the frame (where the cab mounts are mounted to) is cracked and they will need to be replaced but i cant find them anywhere, not even on LMC

Re: New truck!!! Build Thread

Little update... Got the bed off, started cleaning the frame and found that the supports for the rear cab mounts and the front bed mounts is basically gone on the bed side. Will have to patch them up. Also planning on taking out the cross member by the spare tire and replacing it with square stock. I'll post pictures later of the nice cancer I have:chevy::chevy:

Didn't get pictures up yet buy spent the day yesterday needle scaling the frame and cleaning that up.... Still got some to go. patched the two bed mounts and got that all squared away. Went and got a thing of por15 to help protect this thing too. Things are going smoothly.

What's left to do:
Clean up bed rails and undercoat them
Fuel lines from throttle body back
Finish wire brushing the frame and undercoat that
Fix steering wheel
Get new sending unit and filler neck
Fix driver door from sagging
Body work and paint!!!

You got yer work cut out for ya!

Those patches you welded in , make sure you grind all the old rust away and have nice shiny metal to weld on. Also your welds look a bit cold.

Just constructive criticisms

Re: New truck!!! Build Thread

hahah no i hear ya, im not a great welder, thats for sure i barely weld, used a little hobart to do that. thanks for the imput though

you may want get your front end checked, judging by the tires on back it looks like your alignment may be off, if those tires were ever on the front of the truck.

ShepWood 11-07-2012 05:31 PM

Re: New truck!!! Build Thread

hahahaha no there is one brand new tire on there and one bald one...thats why it looks like that.... the PO was kind a do do

^^^ this... I thought this until I broke a ball joint. Had this happen more than once. Nothing like driving it until the wheels ACTUALLY fall off, and putting it back together and keep pounding on it.

Any noise in the front end, any amount of wandering left to right, binding or bouncing and it deserves IMMEDIATE care.

Even if you think its alright take a look anyways. Its well worth a few minutes with a jack to check it all out.
