53 chevy pickup

i'm thinking of getting a 53 chevy pickup. the body, and frame is in fair/good shape. the engine is no good. there is a rod sticking out the side of the block. the guy is selling it for 1200 obo. i offered 700, he said 900, i said 800, he said 850. do u guys think $850 is a good deal for this truck. sorry i don't have a pic, and i forgot to get one while i was there. (i had the camara). please let me know what u think. thanks

Are all the glasses still there? If the body looks in fair repairable shape, and its all there besides the bad engine. IMO I think it would be worth the $850. May be different in your area, but here its hard to find a truck in restorable shape for under $1,000.

well project is underway... i got the bed off and torn apart. the front clip is stripped. and now the engine is about to be taken out... it's to bad that the engine has to be screwed up. that truck is all origional. i notice that the front half of the frame is in excelent condition. the rear is in good condition but has some minor need of some help, although is strong enouph to deal with what ever i need it to do. i found the cab corners were rusted out and filled with puddy along with small holes in the floorboard near the front fenders. (that sucks.) every thing else is in good shape the cab is strong and looks good as far as the parts that didn't get filled with puddy. i guess i got a little work ahead of me. but hopefully it wont be too bad... wish me luck.

oh, any sugestions of what engine/tranny/rearend combo i should get? i was thinking of a motown 427 sb. 600 hp and 575 torque.

horvath 06-28-2004 11:17 PM

Good luck!

I'd do a Chevy 350 sb, with a 350TH tranny and Chevy 12 bolt rear ... but that's me.

Find yourself a 70's Camaro and do a transplantor recycle everything into your truck..................You

MacGyver 07-25-2004 05:43 PM

wow nice

you got a great deal for that truck! :metal: :bowtie:

chevythunder 08-08-2004 05:20 PM

i have finnaly ripped that truck apart and to find some minor flaws i can take care of.
-starting with the frame, there is a section of the frame that has a bad spot. a lot small rust holes in the frame. there seems to be a spot where they welded the frame as if it has been in an accident and they try to weld it and pull it back to make it straight again
-engine/trans/rear. the engine is trashed. i removed it and got a good close look at it and there was a huge hole in the side of the block. so now it resting place is in the junkyard. the tranny went along with it, the rear will so be when i finaly get my new rear for it
-cab. well the last owner/s did a really bad job in restoring it. the cab corners are filled with body putty. the rocker pannals has some small holes, the toe boards, floor boards are in good shape and can be used again. i got to get new kick pannals (in/mid/outer). they filled the rusted holes with bondo too.
-bed, well nothing really wrong with it. sand and paint.
all fender need replaced. again bondo queen.

as far as i'm conserned, it is a good project truck and will injoy putting it together. i am gonna get a mustang 2 ifs and a 4 link rear suspension. engine is gonna be a mildly hot 383 backed by a 5 speed manual. all brakes are gonna be disk and powered. steering is gonna be powered also. the minor details is still undesided.

Sounds like you've got a good start and some cool plans going ... keep us posted!
