Engine rebuild question

Hi guys i'm new to the game with old muscle. I have a 1984 C-10 that has a built motor in it unfortunately a bolt of my stud fell down my carb . Can anyone point me in the right direction on what type of rebuild kit to purchase if one is needed like brands vs. reliability but still have my same power while being on a strict budget i really think i just gonna need top end done no shavings in oil. thanks

What kind of power are you looking to make? Goodwrench 350 engines are really good value, you can add a cam and better heads to make decent power. My truck goes pretty decent with that engine. I have ram horn manifolds and a performer rpm intake with a quadrajet 4 barrell and all emission hooked up. My engine was 1550$ shipped to my garage from summit...also with no core charge.

If you just dropped a bolt/stud in your intake, pop your intake off and get it out. Unless you want a new engine or it doesn't run now. You can't hardly build a engine for what a crate cost's anymore. JMO

Re: Engine rebuild????

It will crank but not idle or run by itself so I'm sure it got in motor but I love the power and the hit of the camera I have I truck like I said the motor was already built I'm jus not sure what exactly has been done to it as far as bore size head work I have a person who can rebuild motors but I will be ordering parts myself so that I kno exactly what I have this time I love the way my cam hits so not really wanting to change anything jus want it fresh

Was the engine running when this happened?

Re: Engine rebuild????

If the bolt got into the combustion chamber there won't be any easy refresh. Could have scratched or beat up a piston or cylinder wall.
You could be looking at a complete new block.
You won't know until you tear it down.

Yea it's at shop about to be tore down I was trying to get me a rough estimate on a good rebuild kit if I have to rebuild pistons and all also have a machine shop if needed

Re: Engine rebuild question

Until you see what the damage is there is now need to buy a kit. If it was mine I would pull it and put it on the engine stand and pull the heads. Then after taking a good look at what got beat up by the bolt make the decision on what gets done. What internal parts you will need will be determined after the engine is cleaned and inspected. I don't use kits as I like to pick and choose the parts that go back in. All the machine work and parts can ad up fast so new crate engines and good used engines become viable options.

Hopefully it didn't cause too much damage. and while their in there its a good time to replace all those parts as well.

Re: Engine rebuild????

Thanks I'm hoping for the same thing and just go ahead and port and Polish heads if it's not already done

Didn't you just post this exact same question yesterday with a different title? When you make multiple posts on the same topic it just gets confusing, and you might not get the best information.

As Jimmy said in that thread, there's no point in getting parts until you know what the damage is. At the least you need to pull the heads.

Re: Engine rebuild????

now with that out of the way you really need to pull the engine apart to see what kind of damage has been done also as with old motors you need to tear down the engine to see what kind of work has been done and also if its been bored out or not ordering a kit before doing this is just plain crazy as the damage may lead to the engine not being repairble, but on a side note i;ve always gotten my kits at

This is the most important question.

Yes, I was a mile from my house and throttle got stuck. I pulled over turned off the truck. I noticed the air cleaner was off carb and choke was pinned. After touching choke, I was unsure if bolt fell or not. I cranked it and the next day it idle fine for about 3 minutes. The truck then started running funny. I put two and two together.

Re: Engine rebuild????

Yea but sometimes two and two don't always add up. Just because it doesn't run right doesn't mean that the nut fell in there. I got a valve cover hold down tab in my motor once while removing the intake and the rattling sound was quite loud when I started it up. I didn't need to guess as to what happened. Before letting anyone sell you on a new motor you need to pull the heads, or at minium buy one of those fancy camera scope deals and take a look in there.

What does that mean? Were clowns coming out of the exhaust? You need to be more specific with the description. A bolt or nut inside a cylinder is generally going to make a racket that doesn't sound very funny - or very subtle.

You mentioned the choke, and then you said the truck idled fine for 3 minutes and then started running funny. That's exactly what might happen if the choke is stuck closed. What bolt is it that you think might have fallen through the carburetor? The passages are pretty small for any type of bolt to fall through.

I would suggest a closer inspection (especially in the area of the intake manifold) for the missing part. If you really think it went into the engine, you're going to need to pull heads, or as Dave said, get an inspection camera into each of the cylinders - but that leaves the possibility your missing part is still in the manifold somewhere. Disassembly is the only way to be sure.

Re: Engine rebuild????

Running funny like it struggling to get gas and won't stay crank without foot on gas I couldn't tell if it was rattling bc of loud motor at the time but with me thinking nut was causing it not to run right I didn't crank anymore to prevent farther damage

truckster 05-20-2017 11:09 AM

Re: Engine rebuild????

A nut or other small part falling through the carburetor and making its way into a cylinder isn't going to make the engine starve for fuel. Have you looked down the carburetor with a flashlight to see if your missing part is perhaps caught in a throttle plate?

It sounds like you're going to need to do some work on your carburetor. If you're pretty sure the bolt or nut or whatever it was made its way through the carburetor, you might pull the plugs and turn the engine over by hand. See if it wants to stop somewhere - that will give you a pretty good idea that there is something in there. But to be honest with you, I would be surprised if that's the case.

Re: Engine rebuild????

If you are lucky the bolt will be stuck under a valve and you will have only a bent push rod. Pull it down until you find out what happened.

Thx guys I'm going to put another motor it did a Lil damage but I can switch my cam over to new motor and probably get new inexpensive heads
