Where do you get your sheet metal
Curious where you get your sheet metal for body work, not patch panels, but flat sheets. HomeDepot has a small, but acceptable selection and my neighbor has supplied me with some thicker gauge iron for frame repair. I'm about to do some larger body work and could use a 2' x 4' sheet and HD isn't the place, so was wondering where others pick up larger size sheets, but not in bulk.

For what some of the box stores sell a 4 x 4 sheet for you could go to a machine shop or metal supply and get a 4 x 8 sheet. Check local machine shops for 18 or 19 gauge. I see you are in PA, check around Lancanster for an Amish/Mennonite welding business. We have one locally here, best prices I can find on 4 x 8 cold rolled steel. Make sure you get COLD rolled steel as hot rolled typically has a mill scale and is challenging for paint finish. My local has to order cold rolled that I get from him in 18/16/14, etc, but he gladly orders for me. If you are looking to do some metal shaping, check with a local metalshaper/coach builder as most of them may have 19 ga in AKDQ cold rolled, which is softer, drawing quality, making it easier to form shapes. Harder to find, but about all I use in 19 ga.
If you don't need a full sheet to remain a full sheet, here is how a 19 ga 4 x 8 sheet was cut neatly to fit in a flat rate Game Board Box. That's right, less than $20 to ship about 55 lbs... They weren't happy with me that day. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203621.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203623.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203624.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203625.jpg |
Re: Where do you get your sheet metal
I have two metal supply shops local to me. I usually grab sheet from the scrap pile because I cant fit it in my car anyway. It ends up being like 60 cents a pound.
