NV4500 to NP205 question.

I'm getting the parts together for this swap in my '77 K20. I have the tranny and I would like to know if there is any style NP205 that will bolt directly to the NV4500. If I understand other threads I've read correctly, a 205 out of an '86 and up 1 ton will bolt up without an adaptor as long as it has the 32 spline female input that was behind the turbo 400 with round 6 bolt pattern.

Thanks for any responses. :chevy:

Hi Mickman. Welcome to the board. You are correct, a round pattern 6 bolt 205 case with 32 spline input gear will mount directly to the back of your NV4500. It's a nice stout combo. -steve

Re: NV4500 to NP205 question.

Thanks for the reply Steve. Today was a good day. I picked up an NP 205 from behind an '87 1 ton with SM 465 tranny for $150.00. The Tcase has the long 32 spline female input and round 6 bolt pattern. Maybe have to shorten the NV output shaft? Or will there be enough endplay with that longer input shaft? I really don't want the output to bottom out and make any problems.

Re: NV4500 to NP205 question.

Leave it alone and mount em up. There were 2 32 spine shafts through the years (short and long) in various apps but the NV uses the long and the input gear in deep. Im excited for you as this is a great combo! Only thing better would be to install a doubler and triple stick the assembly but this is probably a little overkill if your building a street rig. Good luck and have fun. -steve

Re: NV4500 to NP205 question.

Thanks again for the reply. I will have an NP 203 transfer case after the swap so, this may be an idea. I would rather have it and not need it than the other way around.

One thing I am curious about though is, the 4500 (241)is out of a '93 and the (SM465) 205 is out of an '87. Is there a commercially avaliable bracket for the xfer case shifter or am I going to have to fab one up?

Reason for the ??. I've seen on AA parts, a boss for mounting the 205 shift handle or bracket and my current setup doesn't have this. I can get one fabbed but would take some doing as I don't have access to welding equipment.

Re: NV4500 to NP205 question.

crap i forgot about the shifter bracket! you will need this and it can be had from AA. I got mine from Gear Tech HD when i ordered my complete package (sorry i cant seem to find a part number in my receipts). It bolts to 2 flange bolts and a top cover bolt and incorporates a boss for the tcase shifter bolt, but this raises a couple of guestions for you.

1st: what is your current seat combo? clearance for the shifter with my bracket is tight using a bench.

2nd: are you seriously considering installing a doubler at this time or in the near future? you will need the appropriate shifters thus a different bracket.

These are not real big issues but something to be mindful of. If all fails look into cable shifters. They are sweet! but pricey.

Your NV is a '93, this is the wide ratio model that has pros and cons; it has the ultra deep 6.34:1 first gear ratio (vs 5.61:1) which as we know is great for crawling but makes for wider ratio from both 1st to 2nd gear as well as a wider spread from 2nd to 3rd which i found is not as friendly on the street. My buddys torguey diesel does fine with this trans but another's underpowered small block struggles especially when under load.

Finally what are you doing for a clutch setup? -steve

Re: NV4500 to NP205 question.

Well, I went out and tried to put the two together today. Found a couple of problems. The shafts fit perfectly but, the long snout on the 205 bottoms out 1.5 inches before they meet. 2nd problem, with the factory tailhousing, the inner shift rail lines up perfectly with the side of the housing. Didn't think to snap a pic but, will post one tomorrow. (gotta work tonight).

The clutch set up is the factory hydraulic set up. I know, right hand slave may cause driveshaft interference. Being the wide ratio shouldn't be a problem as I've got a 454 for power and gonna build another higher hp/tq output motor soon.

The twinstick idea would be somewhere down the road as this is my DD.

I've got the bench seat also but, down the road may be buckets if I can find a decent donor vehicle.

Stay tuned guys and gals, more to come... :)

Here are a couple of pics that I snapped with my cell phone. Kinda shows how they line up.

Looks like you need a spacer in there, like this: https://secure.advanceadapters.com/i...ds/50-0206.jpg http://advanceadapters.com/product/1...5-32T-T/C.html kinda pricey though.

mickman77,

Did you buy your spacer or have it made? Any specs? I have a lathe and mill.
I am in the middle of this right now. I will be picking up the NV4500 on Monday. Should I get its tcase? Mine is a 27 spline 8 bolt pattern.

After a month and a half, the driveline is holding up very well but, a vibration has emerged from somewhere. It starts at about 55-60 mph and worsens with speeds above that. It's my guess that the driveline is binding at the front joint. After the tranny swap, the rear driveline was lengthened and rebalanced with new u-joints (1350's) and knuckles on both ends. Fluid level is good in both the transfer and rear end..

Anybody a driveline expert that may have some input? Tried to get a couple of pics. Can get more if needed just let me know what you need to see.

Sorry for the delay Doug.
I took the material and a gasket to a local machinist and he turned it on his CNC machine. I didn't get the layout or programming for it.

PD is the Office bar exist?

Re: NV4500 to NP205 question.

Not much of an angle to cause binding.

I'd check if the pinion and NP205 output yokes have any side to side play.

do you still have the dimensions on the plate you had made? i am getting ready to do the same swap.

I may be doing this swap in a 78 k20, I just wanted to know what crossmember and clutch setup did you use and how much total did you have in it. Also is it nicer to shift a 465 or is it the same clunking kind of shift, thanks for any replie

That's a great setup, I will be doing the same combo with my 4x4 pickup. Just trying to figure out what gear ratio I need to use with 37" tires.
