Re: Sticky Steering Wheel
What year truck?
I found some original 88-94 styleleather wrap wheels on ebay. My DD was funky and I just got a plain padded slip on leather cover for it. It was cheap (what I needed at time) and actually feels good. |
Re: Sticky Steering Wheel
You can put anything on there with the correct hub. I am running a 69 Camaro 3 spoke with leather rim. I would like to have one of the Olds 4 spokes but have not found one reasonable.
Got some photos this morning. https://i.imgur.com/CB02hBKl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/yfYCtirl.jpg |

I actually replaced my four spoke wheel with a '94 S10 wheel when I could still buy them new at the dealer parts counter. So it's been on there a long time. I have a '70's four spoke Camaro wheel on my old car with the same affliction and have to wipe it down with carb cleaner every so often. Forget about trying any of the newer steering wheels; the shaft diameter and knurling is a different size. That's a NOGO there.

Haha forgot to tell the year. Its a 98 and i was hoping to keep the Airbag.

Re: Sticky Steering Wheel
I've cleaned old wheels w/ purple power, but none w/ an airbag. I also wrapped a Camaro 4-spoke w/ leather from wheelskins.com. I'd probably pad is more if I was to do it again.

Re: Sticky Steering Wheel
Try wiping it with Baby oil several times , get a micr fiber towel and rub the baby oil in and let it soak good and wipe off the excess . It may take several times to work but I use it on all my classic steering wheels , door gaskets and door panels .

Re: Sticky Steering Wheel
I've used wd40 until the rag is sorta clean then simple green and clear water rinse..
can't stand sticky steering wheels! good luck! |
Re: Sticky Steering Wheel
Best I've found is very hot soapy water with a thorough drying, then leather conditioner. I've not heard of these wheels getting sticky, but the late 70's truck wheels were somehow notorious for feeling like fly paper after awhile. I've also heard simple green is effective, but have never used it personally.

Re: Sticky Steering Wheel
Anyone try Wheelskins leather wrap kind? Been researching them and watching YT videos. I might try that.

Re: Sticky Steering Wheel
If it doesn't have any tears or holes in it, I'd use hand cleaner on it. I've used fast orange WITHOUT the pumice on a lot of them. With the pumice once.

If it's grease and crud buildup from peoples' hands a lanolin based cream hand cleaner like DL or Permatex shouldn't badly damage the leather. |
