need keys cut

Hello

I am looking to get some copies of a key made for the 1956 Chevy 6400 dump truck that my uncle has. This is the original key and ignition. I took the key to Ace hardware and the key cutter could not garentee that the key would work and he did not charge me for it either. does anyone know what blank keys I should buy? the Serial Number is on the truck is 6B560017778. I really dont wnat to have to DRIVE to San Jose or Salinas to have some keys cut. Ace will do it for free if you bring them the key, which is conveniently located on my way to work.

There just flat weren't too many blanks in use by GM in those days. I've got a ring of Old keys out in the garage that I have used as emergency keys over the years and most of that style will fit in locks from the late 40's to the mid 60's

All keys from early days will fit they are cheap :metal: also all keys were made by Briggs and Stratton who made
door locks and IGNITION . switches for GM if you get the number off the cylinder you can have original one cut to fit your switch . or find a bunch of old keys for GM one of them will turn your IGNITION switch

From 1935 to 1966 GM used the Briggs and Stratton groove style 15. The blanks are B10 for ignition (octagon), and B11 for the locks (round). I went to a locksmith, they had the correct blank, but it did not have the B&S logo. The first link you posted looks like the correct blank.

Re: need keys cut

You should be able to tell you person at Ace or any other key place that you need a B10 Key. The original GM label keys are nice but with the stiff asking prices for original blanks I can't see the point of wasting the money when you can get a good working key for a couple of bucks. Leave that 45 bucks a pair stuff for the gotta have it all perfect restorers.

Personally I like going to Lowes for keys as they have a setup that they insert your key in to make sure that the grooves are right and you stand a lot better chance of getting the right key but I did get a key made for my boat at Ace this morning that works great.
