Grant Steering wheel install issue
I got a Grant 969 classic steering wheel yesterday. I also got the 3162 install kit, according to Grants website. Truck is a '69 C10.
I can not get the horn cap to attach to the plate. The instructions say to line the dimples up in the cap with the notches in the fiber plate. There are no notches in the fiber plate. I can not get the cap to stay on the plate with the spring installed. Any ideas? |

Well there should be small notches on the edge of that fibre plate thingy, if not you should send it back for replacement, alternativly mark where the dimples are on the horn button onto the edge of the plate and use a small file and create your own.
Once you put the spring on the column nut you line up the dimples push down on the horn button and twist it on |
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
hope you can get the horn to work, mine never did......

Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
This is the install kit I got,
http://www.grantproducts.com/products/view/240/ Notice in their pics there are not any reliefs. I have emailed grant. |
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
I think it is saying something about Challenger models only have the indents for horn button removal.
http://www.grantproducts.com/files/i...524-00-01b.pdf I bought the Classic Nostalgia wheel so it came with everything included...I think the Classic & Challenger series come with the dimples on the disc. |
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
Here are the instuctions for the kit that I have.
http://www.grantproducts.com/files/i...7508-00-01.pdf 12. Remove shoulder bolts and reinstall same through retainer contactor ring so that the fiber side is toward you. Tighten shoulder bolts, connect wire lead to retainer. 13. Position spring on nut (you may find tape a help). Place horn cap in position by aligning dimples in cap with reliefs in fiber material and push until dimples pass the fiber. Turn cap left or right until tight (1/4”-1/2”). |
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
I don't think that 3162 install kit is the one you need, it doesn't show dimples on the one in their pic, and it says "Standard" that makes me question it.

Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
According to their site it is correct.
"This is the standard Grant Steering Wheel Installation Kit. These kits may be used to install all Classic Series, Challenger Series or Signature Series Steering Wheels. Each kit contains complete step-by-step instructions, a die cast hub, grade 5 hardware and matte black trim pieces." |

Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
Confused!! I would use a round file and make the indents myself...but then I live so far away and would need to wait like another 2 weeks for a replacement.
|
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
No problem. I was afraid I might be confused as well.
When I get home, Im going to try and make the reliefs as you suggested. I had thought about that last night when I did the install, but figured I better check to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. |
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
Good luck mate...it should be a breeze to do.

Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
Grant does make some nice looking wheels, but the horn button and fiber plate it is supposed to attach to was a problem as well for me--on a wheel very similiar to yours I managed to get the button on, but it didn't seem secure. But it was the best it would fit.
About a month later the button popped off by itself and off the horn went, while I was parked at my kid's soccer game, of course I was in the front row closest to the field. Highly embarrassing; but at least it wasn't at 2:00 AM in the garage when it happened. That was the only Grant I've had--but I've read on here where someone else had similiar problems with several Grant wheels. I've been partial to OEM wheels since my experience. |
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
Yeah, so I messed around with it.
I took the plate off and notched it. I then discovered the overall diameter if the cap to large that the dimples in the cap were not deep enough to hold the cap on under the pressure of the spring. The stock horn button has not been functional since I got the truck. I might just leave it unhookedand leave the spring out, maybe silicone cap if needed. Unless I can mod or get another cap. So I took a cap off a moon steering wheel, and it works!
It is a problem with the grant cap. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
I inherited a Grant with my truck, and never could get the horn right. Finally gave up and went hornless. It's no big deal until you're in the parking lot at Walmart on Saturday. Like today. Almost got tapped by some old guy backing up with his eyes focused straight in front of him. I had to lean out the window and yell stop. How humiliating was that...
I gotta get a horn working. Maybe put a momentary toggle under the dash? I gotta have something. Today was too close. |

Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
Turns out the bolts is the problem. The Shoulder was to short to allow the plate to sit far enough from the wheel for the cap to make contact.
I had to notch the plate myself, and leave the 3 bolts somewhat loose. I think I will put some locktight on the. BTW, I emailed Grant, on Sept. 27. They replied saying the plate might be wrong and they were sending me another one. I have never recieved anything from them. :( |
Re: Grant Steering wheel install issue
Glad you found the problem mate, I would contact Grant again especially as they said there was no prob sending a replacement...just chase them up.
