Question for qjet gurus
 

What I’ve found so far is that this carb is a 69 or so, and should have a divorced choke. It’s currently on a 66 k20 with a manual choke cable but not connected. Is there a way to either a)convert it to fully electric choke, or b)somehow mount a divorced choke coil onto the 74ish egr cast manifold? It looks like a bracket has been added or change to attempt to use the manual choke cable but the angle is all wrong and I just can’t get it to work.

You’ve got a divorced choke carb on a hot air choke manifold.
Manual choke is hard to set up as the link arm needs to move vertically.
You can get an electric choke conversion but it might be tough to install it with the hot air choke cover(the square plate with the tubes in it) in the way. With a thicker base gasket which raises the carb 1/4 inch you might get one to work.

Excellent info, thank you very much. I saw that conversion kit while researching but wasn’t sure if it would work or not. I may just start looking for a different carb and/or intake.

Keep the carb and get a eddy performer intake. Then you can set up your choke with the needed choke stove and linkage.
If you decide to go eddy carb too just remember you might need a fuel regulator and a heat plate and possibly throttle cable or rod brackets all which can add another 100 bucks over the new carb price.

I’d be fine keeping the carb if I can get the choke working. I’d like to get rid of the egr also so it sounds like a performer might be the best bang for my buck. Then I would just need to buy the coil that sits down in the intake, correct?

If you decide you want a qjet with automatic choke check local salvage yards. In my area they can be had for less than $50. You can also look on Ebay for some good bargains. I got one on ebay for $50 some years back and it was in excellent shape.

You’ll need the coil, cover, link rod and the piece from Edelbrock to square it up in place on the intake.

This is the manifold and mount I need, but no coil or linkage. Can you tell if this carb was setup for manual choke, or were they just not using one?

I was going to post a pic of mine then I remembered I don't remember how to post pics lol. I bought a manual choke kit from Carquest. It was easy but the choke works backwards. You have to push it in to close it and pull it out to open it.

I was too cheap to pay $75 for the Edelbrock divorded choke kit so I went manual.

No, they just don’t have the coil and cover and rod there.
Just recalled (foggy Memory) that a buddy had set up his with a manual choke. Worked quite well IIRC.
He made a mount bracket to attach a small bellcrank to, that would move the carb linkage vertically as he pulled/pushed the choke cable horizontally. I think he got the bellcrank off a 10 speed bike. Used for shifting or braking. I’ve used bellcranks in carb linkage before.
