radio acts like its skipping only when truck is running

i am having a major problem with my radio the truck is a 1986 chevy k10 custom and i just installled a jvc HD reciver with dual usb jacks and aux port well since i installed it i cant even listen to it when truck is running. if i have truck off and put key in the on pos. radio works just fine but when i put truck in start pos. and have truck running the radio acts like its skips in all sources im getting constant power 14.3 to 14.5 volts to radio threw main fused line and constant wire. no one knows or has heard of a radio doing this that i have asked. lights in the radio dont dim or go out and radio doesnt turn off only problem is the sound cuts out when motor is running and then sometimes will get worse if i give it gas i have ran main power and ground from battery to radio and same thing ive rewired all speakers with 16ga wire and still nothing so any help will be great cuase i been working on this for 4 days now

Re: radio acts like its skipping only when truck is running

a) Does it cut out at ANY volume level with the truck on?
b) And it's all sources, not just the radio, correct?

If you answered 'yes' to both:
I would check your ground one more time. Make sure it's relatively short in length and goes to BARE metal. If that doesn't work, I'd try another stereo.

If you answered 'no' to a or b, we can find a fix.

i'd check for clean tight connections all around
ground antenna power and speaker

Re: radio acts like its skipping only when truck is running

I've seen the factory plugs fail and cause this
sounds like you have bypassed all that tho
wire a meter at the same time to the power and neg(for the radio)
see if the voltage drops when shaking/driving

Re: radio acts like its skipping only when truck is running

riveted1 A:yes B:yes all sources and to everyone else all gounds are cleaned and ohm checked all are good and for the ground wire for the radio i have two one in the main harness for the radio and one to the case to the dash. volt meter between ground and pos. while truck is running or shacking is 14.4 to 14.5 no drop in voltage and yes the factory plug was cut out and just wired straight to radio i will upload to videos one of truck running and one while its not of the radio

wondering about power and ant power leads

haha, im sorry to laugh but i can only imagine how frustrating that is! that is a wierd one, i have been installing car audio for 14 years or so and that is a new one. if i were you i would try a couple things. first keep the antenna unpluged and see if that helps, try extending the power and ground wires and at least one speaker to get the radio away from the dash. it could be getting interference from the distributor which is pretty close to the radio in your truck. make sure that you have a good ground going from the batt to the body of the truck. also make sure the wires you ran to the batt are not run near the distributor at all. good luck and i would love to help more if i can!

Re: radio acts like its skipping only when truck is running

I had a simular problem with my Alpine radio. It drove me nuts. I only live 30 min from Alpine so I took it there. It worked perfect. Long story short, the problem was two things. 1. Factory harness was bad.
2. I had installed their plug in amp. Problem is that it only works with 4 speakers hooked up. With just 2 speakers it would skip like an old record. I hooked up the rear speakers and It has been perfect since. Don't know if this will help but I thought I would try.

Re: radio acts like its skipping only when truck is running

That is weird. I was leaning toward distributor/spark wire RFI interference, but I thought that would only affect the radio reception. But with today's electronics, I guess anything is possible. I seriously would try a different stereo and see if you get the same results. Buy a cheap one from Walmart and take it back when you're done.

Re: radio acts like its skipping only when truck is running

Sorry to resurrect such an OLD Thread!

Did Chevyman1986 ever get a solution to this unique issue ??

I am experiencing the exact same issues and it all started once I installed HEI dist.

I have tried everything mentioned in this OLD post.

Can't seem to get any results ..... SO MANY different ideas from numerous web sources.

Mine is a Custom Autosound (which some people BASH as trash - but not everyone) seems to be noticed in various Brands - not just Autosound

My HEI is a Summit Racing distributor -- which ODDLY enough gets mentioned often in the various forums.

Could Summit Racing be using something "inferior" for design in their HEI Dist. ??

This is just mind-boggling -- I hope Chevyman1986 got a fix and doesn't mind sharing the results

Thank you! Blazester

HEI distributors have a capacitor (or condenser as they used to be called) inside to prevent radio frequency interference:

They rarely go bad but it makes me wonder if you might be dealing with a defective one. Or maybe a poor connection to that capacitor.

Yup, that was the fix for my noise issue too! Mine was the red square style.

Have you fixed your issue yet? I have a 68 camaro with a new style classic radio and it skips while the car is running. Sounds great when car is off but someone said it can be the coil, is this true? Thanks guys

I know this is a year old since the last post, but having the same issue.... Would love to hear if a fix has been found. Has anyone tried ferrite chokes to any success?

Have you replaced the capacitor in the distributor yet?

I havn't yet, but my distributor is new (6 months). I placed ferrite chokes on power, ground, usb, antenna and it greatly improved (not eliminated) but we can now hear our music. I feel like I am on the right track eliminating EMI.

My capacitor was bad right out of the new box
Make sure you let us know what fixed yours.

Re: radio acts like its skipping only when truck is running

That is what mine is doing so I ordered the condenser which is called an alternator radio noise capacitor, hopefully that works. The radio is a Custom Auto-sound for a 67 C-10 Thanks for all the post's and we'll talk again.

I have a 71 C-20 with the same problem of the radio cutting in and out while the truck is running.
I ordered these and will keep ya posted on the results when they arrive.
the dist. has been changed to HEI also.
