SM 420 shift pin size

Anyone know what size roll pin fits in the SM 420 shift socket, I tried to query it on here, but it didn't find anything.

Shift pin? You're talking about the pins that push into the transmission cover to keep the twist lock in place?

Yes those are the pins I want to replace them with roll pins, the top will need drilled, so I wanted to know if anyone knows what size the inner part is, as it is just larger than where it fits in the top.

Roll pins don't usually last. Did you look at the link? It's a very creative way to solve the problem.

Hardened steel roll pins will last a pretty good while, when I worked at Blumenthals trans. we used to do this to worn 420 and 465's, I just can't remember the dia. They are easily replaceable as well. I just ordered a 120pc kit on Amazon, it was 10 bucks. Should be in good shape.

This would be a great repair though for someone that has the tooling to turn some steel down to make some replacements.

Well, tooling is cool but you don't need it to make pins like those. Cut the shank off a 5/16" bolt, drill through the center, tap it for a 1/4" bolt. You can install the bolt from the outside of the cover.

I believe the pins are 1/4" in the trans cover and 5/16" on the inside. You'd have to drill the cover to 5/16" to use a roll pin.
