Cheap way to lower?
 

I've been thinking about a nice low stance on the new truck but need to keep in budget. So i'm wondering if you guys in your endless knowledge could help me out. still learing the basics with the trucks too.

dont know what your driving but i cut one loop off my front coils and switched the rear coils for the jeep springs. that gave me about a 2/4 drop. do a search on these things and youll get plenty of info.

cheap jobs done poorly with 40year old worn suspension parts are the rage fer sure

As of now ive got jeep springs in the rear (cant do much hauling with em) And I plan on cuttin a coil out of the front, getting it re aligned, and making an adj panhard bar from an old one ive got layin around)

front lowering spindles arnt that much think you can buy a kit with springs for around 300, and if you got leafs in the rear get shackels for around 60.
this is my buddys truck and im pretty sure we did it for less than 400.

You can get:Jeep springs for lets say $30 (free at a suspension shop that lifts jeeps)

Chop front springs for 2" drop (1 coil)

Get it aligned for $60 bucks

Make your panhard bar adj. with edelbrock alum tierod adj. (posting pic)

And your shocks,well Havent thought that far ahead..lol

sorry forgot to post that i'm driving a 72 350/350 short box c10. I tried wording my search different and got some results. Basically what I was looking for was like a review of what other members have used to drop their trucks. trying to find a good product that isn't going to bust my wallet open but I do have a few dollars to spend. Also wondering what is the first place I should be looking at to mod.

ive cut springs in the front before and it works ok its free thats good but if you can afford it i would definently go with some drop spindles.

Well if yuo got $ to spend ECE sells a 4/6 kit, very nice for around 800

cut a coil in the front and make a block for the rear out of 2x2 steel.

Oh sure, you can cut springs, trip through junkyards looking for similar pieces with different spring rates, or even fab lowering blocks. Just as cost effective would be to find some 50 gallon drums, strap 'em to the front and rear and fill them with tap water. Sure, it might not be the safest option but it would be pretty cheap and doesn't require any cutting or welding tools.:lol:

if you have access to a torch then you can just heat the bottom loop on the spring and let it fall. i did that once when i was young on a 68. i had my cousin stand next to the wheel wheel with a yard stick and let me know where i was, i droped it a little at a time so it would not get uneven. takes about 15min and you dont have to take the springs out. put new shocks under it, had the front end allighnment checked and i drove that truck like that for 3 years. we didnt have fancy lowering kits for them back then. you had to use your imagination and go to town.

yeah just heat up them front coils and get some bags of cement and a tonneau cover. Seriously 'tho....save your money, DO IT RIGHT AND CRY ONCE. Never enough time or money to do it right but always enough to have to do it AGAIN.
If trucks a keeper and you like a nice ride, the ability to haul stuff and keep front tires aligned, do it right, otherwise get out the torch and fire away!!!

i couldnt of said this any better myself there are somethings on my truck that i am now redoing for the 3rd or 4th time because i didnt nave the money but wanted it done "right now" back then.

I'm huge on eBay finds, keep your eyes peeled and you'd be surprised what you can find for cheap, the boards f/s ads are good as well but a little less easy north of the border as far as shipping etc. I'm going all CPP this time around, but that's just because it isn't a daily driver, I plan on this taking a few years, and if it sits in the garage a little longer to get it done exactly how I want the first time it's worth it. I do like the homeade 2in rear block and 1 coil cut idea if you don't mind uneven front tire wear, when I first got mine this was how the PO had dropped it, but it causes inner tire wear to be pretty bad. Welcome to the board, there's lots to learn on here and some of these guys are crazy in their knowledge, wish I had known about this when I was building square body 4x4's.

Here was how it was done "back in the day" before we had the luxury of dropped spindles and aftermarket springs ...

Front = cut one full round out of the front coil = 2" - 2 1/2"

Rear = Jeep or early Chevelle/Malibu springs in the rear with a 1 1/2" block & longer u bolts. CCP can help you out with these.

*** do not - repeat - DO NOT heat and collapse the springs, no matter how cheap it is to do ***

& don't worry about the adjustable Panhard bar ... it isn't needed long as you aren't dropping the rear more than 4-5 inches. add the spindles and new springs in the future as your budget allows
