Alternator + Electric Radiator Fans = Need Recommendations

Yesterday I was going to bolt up the alternator to the freshly painted brackets on my crate engine, but stopped when I realized the alternator bearings are old and dry sounding.

This truck has a busted up fan shroud, so all of this just screams to be converted to an electric fan set up with an alternator that will run it.

So, can you school me on alternators?
  • 1 wire or 3?
  • Internally regulated or externally?
  • What size output is needed for this set up?

For the electric fan set up, I'd to grab something from the local U-pull to keep the prices low and have read that the Windstar 3.8L fans can work, are there other options that are better? Any and all recommendations are appreciated.

I ran a CS130 and Lincoln MK8 fan on my old 454 truck. That was when I lived in TX and it happily ran at 205, a/c on or off all summer.

I may go with an explorer dual fan setup on my current build.

I also have a CS130 on the caddy, but no room for an e-fan

Any internal regulator alt will work, and generally give better output than stock. I'd avoid a one wire, that's not the best way to go. Madelectrical.com has some good reading about this.

Others will chime in, however, I run dual Flexalite fans. I have a 94 internal reg. Alt. But the alternator does not power the fans. They get the power from your battery. The alt. just replaces the charge. I run a dual Batt. Setup and my fans draw from the second battery. Many run a single. When I did I had a Optima Yellow top Battery. Was fine for years. I hear they can run your battery down in really hot weather but I have never experienced this. Since 2013 I have been running dual Walmart $60 deep cycle batts that have a one year warranty. So far so good. I dont drive the truck much but it starts every time and I have no worries.
Oh and I second the 3 or 4 wire.
I have had a one wire and it was fine.
But if you read up the multi wire units boost output when needed. (elec fan setup maybe)

I would go with a CS130 or CS144.

Would this do the job?
