1967 C30 dump truck
 

Got her home after a LONG trip last weekend. This is my work truck, so it won't be super nice. I have a few things to do before she hits the road.

The truck is a 1967 with the small back window. The truck is surprisingly original, right down to it's split rims.
Factory options include 133" wheel base, AM radio, power brakes, deluxe heater, 292 inline 6, custom group, heavy rear springs, gauges, marker lights and dually wheels. The truck has a SM425 4-speed. The clearance lights are aftermarket.
The bed is an old grain type bed with a steel front added on. The bed's round ambers are strobe lights.

Future upgrades will include:
non-split rims
HEI
front disc brakes
internally regulated alternator
relays on the headlights
power steering
tach (non-factory)

The body is fairly solid. The core support under the battery tray is rusty, the rockers have a couple small holes, the cab corners need a little work, and the fenders have some small holes in the lower corner.

I am pretty sure this truck hasn't been washed in years. I am 100% serious about that. The cowl is completely full of leaves and twigs too, so that will have to come off this spring so I can clean it out.

Today I hooked up the choke, it simply wasn't hooked up at the carb, I like easy fixes like that.
Today I went to a junkyard about an hour from here and picked up 7 wheels for it. The 16" wheels that I went to pick up turned out to be 16.5's. I was disappointed to say the least, but I got a decent deal on them so they will have to work for now. They do have tires on them, so that's a huge plus. I ordered lug nuts today so hopefully I will get the wheels on tomorrow.
We went to the car wash today. I spent $9. I cleaned up the new wheels, and spent a long time getting the grime off the paint of the old girl. I also spent some time under the hood. The motor was very oily. I think we will need to do some new gaskets on this thing. The rockers are pretty noisy so we will have to pull that valve cover anyway to get them adjusted.
The brakes were grabbing pretty bad. I will start with bleeding them, but I am sure a brake job is in order. I plan to put discs on the front so that project may have to be moved forward a bit.

Picture of the new wheels. The bald one that's leaning up a bit is the spare. The one towards the front that looks like a tire with no wheel is a front wheel with a ton of brake dust on it.

Perfect project. Your planned mods are exactly what I'd do to it if it were my truck.

On all of my trucks, I do disc brake swap if it doesn't have them originally, headlight relay mod, HEI, all of it. You're reading my mind.

Thanks Kevin, those mods really increase the drivability of these old trucks, and the great thing is most of them don't cost much money.

You have been no help on my dually fascination either. I have been looking for a while, but your latest dually thread only fueled the fire. I can't wait to get this truck on the road.

Today I put the new wheels on it. I have left the 1/2" wheel studs for now and used tapered lug nuts. This summer it will get a disc brake front end, and I will swap the rear studs over to 9/16" at that time too. I really like the white wheels over the old black ones. This summer I will pull the wheels off again and repaint them.

I am taking the split rims in to the tire shop to have these old tires taken off. I will put the split rims up in the garage rafters just in case I ever restore this old beast.
The truck needs exhaust bad. The exhaust shop is next to the wheel shop so when I take these old split rims in I will have some exhaust put on too.

As you can see in the second picture my boys enjoyed the truck too.

thats a very cool rig.... I have been thinkin of sellin my 97 GMC K2500 and spending some cash on a 72 dump body C30 I saw recently.. I mainly use the GMC for haulin stuff.. the dump would carry more stuff...

its looking good man. sadly I didnt get a chance to look it over yet. the only part I can remember is the grille and bumper.
the white wheels are a big improvement.
oh, when you switch to 9/16 studs I have a set of long acorn nuts for it if interested.

Sweet project, that would look good with just a basic cleaning and vacuuming. Maybe eventually paint the bed sides white or black, and repainting the wheels will really make it shine

Thanks guys. The plan is to do a few updates, and then paint the box white, and then work the heck out of it. The box may be too much white, so I may paint the lower part of the box black, I don't know, we'll see what happens!

I manage rental properties. The truck will be used when cleaning up new properties - it will haul junk to the dump. It will be used after storms to haul branches to the dump. It will be used in the fall to haul leaves to the dump. I will use it to haul gravel to repair driveways. I will use it to haul dirt and river rock when working on landscaping.
It will get used!!

it will get used to haul a front suspension 1 hour south...
it will get used to run to Omaha to the pick-n-pulls...
it will get used for Hobo Days parades...

I bought my disc brake conversion kit today for $400. Pictures below. Actually, it's much more than a disc brake conversion. It's a whole 1975 C30 dually. It has my disc brake parts, power steering parts, 16" wheels, and a few other goodies. I was disappointed that it doesn't have a sway bar, but there is a sway bar bracket under there so it must have had one at one time.
There is plenty of stuff to sell too. Tach dash, tilt column, reese receiver hitch, and probably more. I went to get it tonight when it was dark, so I really haven't looked it over. At $400, I really wasn't too concerned about getting ripped off.
Take a look at the brake system on the firewall, can anyone tell me about it?

Your new brakes look like a hydra boost should work good probably runs off the power steering . The dumper cleaned up nice and the wheels look great . The new donor truck looks like you got a lot of good stuff for $400 . You and the kids should have years of fun and work out of the old Dump Truck !!!

The 75 does not look too bad either. Does it have a bed? I'd be more inclined to work the 75 and restore the 67!

Shawn, does the 67 have PS? I think I would consider the hydroboost swap into the 67 if so. they have much more assist than vacuum does.

I agree. I'm putting the same set-up on my '67 C-30. Of course since a diesel makes no vacuum, I have to to have power brakes.

Todd, the 67 does not have PS, but does have PB. I think I will just swap the whole works over, PS and PB, and then sell the PB off the 67.

It has a flat bed, and I am looking for a dump. So, the 75 will become a donor to keep other trucks on the road.


Here are some more pictures. It has dual alternators, although only one is hooked up. The one that is not hooked up appears to be a high output, so it will probably go on the 67. I will also put the wheels, brakes, and PS on the 67. The 4-speed in the 75 has a PTO so I may hang on to it for a rainy day. The 75 also has dual flowmasters, so those will either get sold or put on a shelf for a rainy day. The home made bed might get sold, but more likely will get cut up to make other cool stuff.
The doors are VERY solid. The fenders look alright, but I suspect they may have patch panels. I will look them over when I pull them off. That will be a summer project.
