Paint peeling off pretty easy... how far to chase?

I'm not planning on taking this truck down to the metal for repaint. I'm either doing rattle can or single stage.

Current paint is rough with a few good areas. On the drivers door, surface rust in one area and there is no paint in that area. Next to it is chipping white paint. If I chip away at the chipping/lifting paint i can get it off in 2" chunks. Chips look they are paint with primer underneath. Then primer remains on the truck surface. My guess is the truck was primered at some point, then they came along and sprayed a different and paint that didn't stick properly. That make sense??

SO my question is, is just scraping off the loose stuff, taking off anything that comes off easily good enough? Then I can feather in the edges, scuff the rest and repaint??

I'm guessing the painters are gonna say get rid of it all and start over. Just don't have the time or $$ for that.

Thoughts?

they could have used the wrong primer.....I just went through that whole ordeal...I had mine to bare metal and they gave me the wrong primer and I sprayed it on...more than one person told me the paint would start coming off in a few years...so I took mine back down to bare metal...the ONLY thing to put on bare metal is epoxy primer...
if you've got rust it needs to go to bare metal and then epoxy primer...
if your just trying to save money you can do a panel at a time..but from your description it needs to go to bare metal...
im just learning body and paint myself....the pros will be along directly with their advice

Best I can tell, I only have rust in a few places. The primer underneath the crappy paint is solid (no rust or bubbling etc). Looks like it didn't take in some places.

So exactly how do you tell when you've gotten all the "some places" taken care of so you aren't wasting good paint (and time, and money) from future peeling issues? Anyone that has to warranty their work takes something like that all the way to bare metal for a very good reason.

It depends on what you want or need. If you want a show truck or a working using 50 footer. I use a wire brush on a drill. then maybe wet sand with 400. and then spray some type of rust converter. then rattle can enamel. and maybe some clear over that. Holds up several years. I build 50 footers.

Yep 50 footers is what I lean towards. Though I think I’d prefer a 20 footer. Haha

Looking at the picture posted, with primer showing on both sides of where the paint chip was removed, this would indicate to me that proper prep was not done between coats. Painting is a process and not all involves painting alone. Mechanical and/or chemical bonds should be observed, with steps taken during the process to promote these adhesion properties. No offense intended toward the OP, as I don't think this is his work, but this falls in the same category as I've mentioned before about POR type paints. The hype lends to shortcuts taken, same runs true IMO for rattle can primers. When things are made too easy, people tend to forget about the complete prep process. Unfortunately this shows the result of that line of thinking, with no way to tell where the next area is that will have delamination from lack of adhesion prep.

Strip it now or strip it later.

Epoxy primer that was painted without scuffing would/could do that... just for those wondering why epoxy has to be scuffed.

My guess is a top coat of epoxy was applied outside the recoat window without scuffing it, then painted because your picture shows primer delamination between coats of gray primers... you have primer on the peeled paint piece.

I'd strip it and start over starting with epoxy primer.

No offense taken. Not my handywork, this is how I acquired the truck. Though I AM one of "those" guys that likes the shortcuts. haha I'm actually contemplating rattle canning this whole truck. I know I know. But, this isn't my forever truck and I just want to drive it and have it still look cool. :fry:

To answer your peeling question directly... the rattle can paint or any other paint will not glue down peeling paint.

There are some other issues with paint/body but this door is the only delamination I have found. It was pretty obvious to spot as you could tap on the surface with finger and it would crack away. Once I got a putty knife on it it started coming off in bigger pieces. In the pic where I stopped, the putty knife would no longer peel off the paint and I can tell by tapping on the painted surface it hasn't lifted.

Yeah that wasn't what I meant. I meant peel off what is loose, what can be peeled, then go back over what's left. As I type that, it sounds pretty half ass. haha. Maybe I'll strip the whole door. ugh Easiest way to accomplish stripping the whole door??? :waah:

Sandblast is easiest...80 grit on a DA is doable and far cheaper.

If you are down to primer and it's hard as hell to get off, then leave it on there. A tightly adhered coating is a good substrate for paint. If you see rusty area through the primer, then keep sanding and recoat bare steel with epoxy primer. Real 2K epoxy primer... not cheap rattle can crap.

These guys make a 2K aerosol and some companies like Eastwood relabel it.

Ok, I don’t have a DA. Tried getting a harbor freight one to work with my compressor, it just blew air (wouldn’t spin). Had compressor set to 90psi. Don’t know if it was my compressor or the crappy HF da. My compressor will run other air tools but quickly runs out.

I’ve got an electric orbital sander and an electric palm sander.

if you have a small side grinder a 3m bristle disc will remove paint like nobodies business......not cheap but works great...I've used palm sanders before they work as well with 80 grit..
