Where to find switch for hazard flashers?
 

My wife and I had a breakdown in a bad spot on the interstate at night with no hazard flashers. Best I could do was leave a turn signal blinking. Needless to say, she doesn't want to do another roadtrip until that is fixed.

I'm assuming the problem is the switch. This is the one on the right side of the column down near the dash. I believe it is supposed to stay out when you pull it, but mine doesn't. Any case, I'm not having much luck finding one. Anybody know who sells one? This is for my 78 GMC K15.

The button just screws in. Many get broken off over time. You get get replacement buttons at most auto parts places, well at least you use to. I think the switch is part of the turn signal cam/switch assembly. The button that stick out is not normally part of the kit from what I remember, that has to be bought seperately or reuse old one.

Thanks Bill! I've still got the button on there, and I did put in a new turn signal switch assembly when I rebuilt the column. I just don't recall ever noticing (or more likely just forgot) that it also provided the hazard light switch. Maybe something is just misaligned, but likely that switch was bad on the reproduction part from day 1.

Am I right that the button is supposed to stay out when you pull it to engage the flashers?

I'm not looking forward to pulling the column back apart...

That is what mine does There is not a separate switch from what I remember, it is just a spot for it to screw in on the turn signal cam/switch thingie. Mine has the outer collar you pull to pull the actual switch out. I think the earlier models just had a simple button you pulled out. Not sure if the button or the switch makes it stay out.

The switch does the hold out part. You can put the later version collar/button on the earlier switches. At least I was able to on my 75.

Don't forget that the hazard flasher is a separate unit from the turn flasher. Possible your problem is a bad hazard flasher.

You push the hazard button IN to activate the flashers and pull the outer ring out to release the flashers.

Yeah ... that's what I was thinking !!!!!

On our old Jeep, which has a GM steering column, the button was broke off so I found a screw with the right threads, and made up a 'handle" with a couple washers and a nut turned tight up against the head. Works just fine.

I traded off the Suburban about six months ago, but I could go out and look at the 76 GMC tomorrow in the daylight. The battery will be long since dead, however.

You guys are correct. You push the button in to engage the hazards, then pull the collar out to turn them off. The suggestion that there are 2 flashers got me researching my AAW harness and fuse panel. There is a spot for a second flasher in the upper left corner of the panel. It just isn't obvious that is what it is for. Hard to see and to reach when the fuse panel is installed.

Installed a flasher module and now the hazards come on. Its just that the button automatically pops back out after about 2 seconds. It's never easy...
