99 Silverado heater core and a/c evaporator
 

Last week I took a couple of days off from work to replace the heater core in my 99 Silverado. Since the a/c had to be discharged I thought why not replace the evaporator also. Well I have to say it was quite a job to get the heater box out of the truck and back in. The new parts came from Rock Auto which is where I buy most of my parts.

The one thing that really annoyed me more than anything was the fact that the cabin air filters( which I did replace ) were inside of the heater box. Now
what genius decided to place the cabin air filters inside of the heater box with no access to them except by removing the entire heater/AC box and open it up.

These things have not been changed since 1999. So you could only imagine how dirty they were. Sometimes these so called educated automotive engineers
who are employed by the auto industry come up with some of the dumbest ideas. I do know that at the end of the day the auto industry does not want you to keep a vehicle that long but I am not that guy. Anyway enough ranting, I am sure that some of you guys have seen plenty other dumb things these bonehead engineers/ auto designers have done.

looking to do this job in the near future, I have the antifreeze smell and fog coming from vents - not excited at all. Id much rather be working on my 72 than my 01.

I watched all of the U-Tube videos which helped somewhat but there are many screws to keep track of. Take lots of pics as you remove stuff. It is not rocket science just lots of labor involved. My A/C evaporator was not bad but I replaced it anyway because it was inside the heater box. Good luck!

The cabin air filters are servicable without removing the entire housing. They take about 10 minutes to change. I change them all the time at work.

Not on my 99 they weren't. They were inside the housing, cause when I went to check out on Rock Auto site a little note popped up and said don't forget the cabin air filters and for a moment I wondered why would it do that. So I went and looked at the filters and they were cheap so I ordered them and I am glad I did.
So various models of the same truck could have some different parts.

Can you snap a pic of the bottom of your housing? Right under the glove box?

Hey, you were right about the way to change the cabin filters. But since my heater core was bad I had to pull the whole thing anyway. I did not pay much attention to the door to access the filters.
