Starter Motor - Will it fit?
 

Hi guys, hoping someone can help me out please.

I have been offered a starter motor to replace my dodgy sticking one but I dunno if it will fit?

I have a manual 3 speed, inline 6, 250ci High Torque motor and the starter is from a 350ci V8........will it fit my inline 6?

If the 350 starter came off something with a manual trans it should bolt right up. (The "nose" will be different for auto trans stuff, but you can swap your old one if needed.) Both your 250 and the 350 will probably have a 168 tooth flywheel.

These starters are also very easy to work on, and if "sticking" means when you hit the key the starter just freewheels, it's an easy fix replacing the starter drive. The starter drive is also not real big/heavy, so shipping to the UK probably isn't even that bad. (I can walk you through it with pictures if you need any help.)

It all depends on if the 350 "donor" had a 153 or 168 tooth flywheel.
Some manual trans cars with 350s only had 10" clutches and use a small flywheel.
As cheap as starters are, I'd go get a rebuilt at a parts store that for sure fits.

Seeing that he's in the UK that may or may not be true. Delco starters are pretty heavy if you have to ship one from the US.

The deal with the 153 vs 168 tooth flywheels is true though; probably wasn't clear enough in my original post.

The starter being for a 350 is a little vague. With your truck having a manual trans, you must use a starter designed to bolt to the bellhousing as your original one does. While a typical small block starter will certainly bolt up to the 250 I6 block, the problem is with the bellhousing in your truck. It will not allow the later model starter to bolt up. What you can do, is remove the nose from your original starter and bolt it onto the new starter, once the nose from it is removed.

Ahhh OK looks like i'll have to have a play around at some point then.

Yeah I should've said that the 350 V8 was running an auto box.....

It might be that im better off ordering in a high torque starter as I can get one for the same price as a bog standard replacement one. I need to find out if its a good quality one though as I dont want an inferior quality (oriental built) one. No offence intended but the parts from over there aren't the best quality....

If you end up buying an aftermarket starter be careful what you pick. I have had just as many quality issues with $220 Powermaster starters as the $70 generic imports. Ironically, the cheap ones seem to have a much better warranty if you get them from a reputable parts house like Jegs or Summit.
