I had the same problem 20 years ago and this is my way out. (it worked 8 years until I sold the truck) Get a 1/4" X 1" piece of flat stock. Measure how long you need it and drill a hole in it to bolt it to the block. Mount the clutch pivot ball on the other end. (I welded mine) Line it up and tighten it using a good lock washer (the flat ones with the lock around the outside edge. Can't think of what they are called.) Everyone told me it wouldn't work but it did without any problems. That's the cheapest way I could find to get me going.

ron my already has a bar on the block with the ball mounted to it there are 2 bolts holes on the old motor one above the oil filter the other right at the dipstick tube the new motor does not have the one where the dip stick is.

I am in the exact same boat. Same year truck same year 305. I talked to a machinist friend of mine. He said to drill and tap the block. Nice and slow with good tools.

I have heard of folks tapping the block before so it can be done. Might require taking it to a good machinest. As I wouldn't have the nerve to do it either. You only need a few threads & a short bolt.
