67-72 rear speakers and subs??
 

I have a 2wd 68' shortbox I am currently building, it is stripped down and getting ready for paint. I have purchased enough dynamat to cover the while cab floor and back of cab. I have removed the ashtray and re-worked the metal so that I can install a double din head unit with navagation and bluetooth and I am planning on running a 6.5" speaker pods in the kickpanel location. I am curious as what to do for rear speakers and subs?

I am running a factory bench seat with the gas tank relocated to the rear so I will have a fair amount of room behind the seat.

Lets see some pics and hear some options please.

I bought a set of brackets that put the rear speakers in the cab corner , they are metal and not sure who made them. Maybe a member here don't know .bought at a swap meet.
I think I'll cheat on the sub box and buy a big one that holds 2)10's or 12's and then cut it at an angle to fit the truck..and screw/glue a new back to it.
You can't build the box for what parts express or sonics sell them for.. and skill saw blade and some wood glue are cheap.. bonus already carpeted.

Rear speakers are for people sitting in the back seat. Properly tuned 6.5 components in the kick panels is all you need. A pair of 10s would be more than enough. A high quality 10 or 12 and a decent amp will get the job done.

Plenty of fill for me, sounds really good, but will never be a 12", nor do I need one.

Amp under other side running a nice set of component 6 1/2"s. That's all I have and it gets plenty loud in that small cab.

Maybe to you, I like the back fill so it is more like a live show..
really no need for 2 subs , the bass they play is most times mono anyways when recorded, now 2) 8" mid bass driver.. for that 80's music with dual bass drumming, yup..
Problem with putting the tweeter down at your feet is, you over work them , boosting the highs taking the natural sound of the music away the more you do that, and they don't like dust/dirt or getting wet.. when you spend the money on "good" component speakers last thing you want to do is trash the tweeters with sand/dust/dirt and anything else, like if you drop your coffee..
But it all depends on your wants and needs . To some the most basic 2 speakers and a radio is fine.
With me, the wife doesn't really like much of my heavier music, or basic rock n roll, so my vehicle is were I get to play it more.. hence the more time spent on making it sound good. I like the sound of a thumping v8 like most in the hobby, but not for 3 hours + at a time.. Got my fill of that racing.

Here are a few pics of my setup- Infinity component speakers up front, 6.5" mid-range in the kick panels, 1' tweeter where the factory a/c vents would be, (need to be higher), 6.5" (with adjustable tweeters) 3-way Infinity in the rear corners, 10" Infinity shallow mount sub behind the driver seat, two alpine amps behind the passenger seat. It sounded pretty good but what really made a difference was the two 4" speakers I put in the dash. Really helped bring the soundstage up to my ears where it should be. Had I known it would make so much difference, I would have put much better speakers in the dash. If you notice, I re-located the hi-beam switch so I could get to it easier. I also shortened the park brake handle to clear the speaker pod better. It wasn't finished in these pics, but you get the idea.

You talking about this? I just cut a couple of inches off the end and welded it up so my hand wouldn't hit the speaker when I used it. Here's the thing... I never use it anyway.

So you just unbolted the original e-brake, modified it and attached it under the steering wheel? I never use mine either because it hits the kick panel speaker pod. I get reminded every time I get it inspected that it should be functioning to pass but they let me slide I think cause they get to take a lap in the blazer...

I unbolted it, modified it, and bolted back in the original location. You must have the foot operated brake. I believe the hand brake was only available in 67 and 68, but if I am wrong, someone will quickly correct me lol. I'm sure you could convert yours, just buy the parts from someone parting a 67 or 68.

I built my own sub inclosure and added the corner speaker panels that I covered also. I put 2 3 ways in the center dash and tweeters where the close hanger where.
I have both amps in the console along with a 12 volt fan to keep them cool.:chevy:

I agree with rear speakers being for backseat passengers. I mounted mine in door PANELS not bottoms of doors. 8”sub under seat. Sounds great and this is the third truck I’ve done this way and is my favorite solution. ‘72 requires a different door panel solution though.

I just ordered a set of Retro Sound Kick Panels, spacers, and a set of Fosgate Punch 6.5" components. I also have a set of Punch 4" I'm thinking of putting in the dash matched to a 4-channel amp. For bass I've been looking at the Fosgate PS-8 to slide under the seat.
