Big Red Dog

I have a 66 one ton Chevy PU that needs some body work done and I am not a skilled body man. I have seen, here and on other sites, some outstanding work done on these old trucks.

So I have been surfing with an eye on location. I stumbled onto shortbed70 and his 65 rebuild. He is only a couple of hours from me on a route I travel monthly, so we met up and came to an agreement.

Here are a few pics of the delivery of my vehicle (well, parts). Troy will be along to document his work. We are looking at both cab corners, foot wells/kick panels, rockers, fenders and a few weld-ups around the cab plus primer and paint (this dog will be red). This is a DD and not a show truck. Troy has already notified me that he has started.

Backing up to Troy's shop to unload.

It is amazing how few parts make up a truck.

And a few of the work I'm asking Troy to do.

Those guys that get paid for being right about 40% of the time were right on this one. The weather started to turn nasty on the way home, but certainly not the worst I've seen or driven through. Snow, rain, sleet, hail, it just couldn't make up its mind.

So I will get this started and Troy will be along to update us. BTW, this is not intended to be a build post but a post for Troy to show his work.

Thanks for looking, Dave.

Floor pans, extended floor sections, rockers, cab corners, and footwell patches, weld through primer and a few odd and ends!

The radiator support corners and pedal assembly look good, Troy.

I should be around sometime tomorrow after noon. I am going to stop by a junk yard and saw mill on the way, so I can kinda time it if need be. I have the latches and the exterior door handles.

Dave, see ya then.

Re: Big Red Dog

I will be home around 5. If I'm not there you can put the latches under that pan right outside the door. I'm going to get the cab up on stands this weekend and start in I hope. I looked at those inner fenders again an I think probably need to get some new ones. They are pretty rough. No rush on them though. I got the doors adjusted to where they need to be last night, I just want to make sure they close good before I pull them off.

Re: Big Red Dog

Go ahead and order the inner fenders, then. That way you will have them in time to shoot.

I need to get out bolts and fasteners and start wire wheeling.

Won't be long before the BBT (Big Brown Truck, I assume that's who will deliver) brings goodies.

Dave.

Got some done today...About 5 hours worth! And yes I welded a piece in behind the outter hince the plug welds..I also sealed the inside of the roof with a spray coating designed for frames and worked great. Im enjoying this even though I have a terrible cold. Called LMC today to and was told the stuff I ordered wont be here till next week because of the storm...I thought really, i ordered tuesday morning...Oh well hurry up and wait.

Looking good, Troy!

I had to drop off the door latches so Troy could fit the doors when he did the rockers and cab floors.

When I walked in the shop, I could smell the confirmation that he had been at work, smelled like grinding steel. Everything he's done looks excellent. I commented to him that it amazed me that one could cut straight and square lines in something that has no reference to straight and square. This alone is probably a year or so of learning curve.

He has received some of the parts ordered and as mentioned above, more coming.

I have a question for anyone that is with us. Any suggestions on how I get the finished body parts home without injury to them? I have pick-ups & open trailers. Troy can build a crate/frame for the cab to sit on. Fenders and hood, though?

Dave.

Thanks Alan.. Im still trying to fill your shoes LOL... Did get some work done today, Got my neighbors b15 honda motor rebuilt and installed, and oh yea worked on the truck. Just using some left over primer I had to get the bare spots covered. Hood still has two small spots I missed and door needs some attention at the bottom corner but not to bad for a Kansas truck... Moving on!

Haha, on filling my shoes. I haven't hit a lick in 2 weeks. Once I kick it in neutral it's hard to get rolling again. ;) I'll be back at it this week. BTW nice work!!

Thanks for stopping by Alan & 1963c-10. Hearing positive comments from you guys about Troy's work reinforces my reasons for choosing him to do this work.

I wouldn't exactly call this spinning wheels. More in the category of progress.

The day of delivery we had a not-so-typical end of season snow storm and a little cold weather. Now we are looking at more reasonable temps and more comfortable working.

Thanks Troy, its looking real good.

Dave.

Yeah, looks like the weather has finally turned here in NC also. Looks like our last good cold front of the year is past us.

Re: Big Red Dog

Thanks guys for the kind words. The spinning wheels was before your truck came along Dave, I'm excited to be Workin on it. Before I just couldnt find motivation to actually do something or anything for that matter. It has been kinda hard to tell people you do paint and body work when I drive a beat up Honda accord with hardly any paint left on it. Soon as your truck is done its going in the shop...Thanks again guys!
