1970 SWB : Porterbuilt to the Extreme "Double E"

5 Attachment(s)
I got 1970 C-10 via a trade. I traded a torn down bodydropped blazer and a new rebuilt engine and some boot. I am pretty sure I made out in the deal.

Body:
1970 Chevy Shortbed Fleetside
1967 Front End
GMC grille (going to replace with chevy grille as soon as I find one)
Body fairly solid except for floorboards

Suspension:
Recently all new suspension (static for now)
Drop spindles and springs
Disc brake conversion on front
Flipped leaf springs
Frame notched

Engine:
350 SBC
- Big cam
- Hedman headers (long ones, they hang below the frame)
- 4 speed M22 Rockcrusher Transmission
- 3" exhaust straight from the headers (freakin loud, in dire need of mufflers)

20" wheels

Future Plans:
Full air ride
New exhaust
New floorboards and pans

welcome......looks like you got something fun to work on. is the passenger bed side rippled? or is it the shadow?

mikeleeshields 07-14-2012 10:22 PM

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

The bed is rippled. It appears to have been sectioned midway in the fenderwell to midway in the rear bedside rocker. It is rather weird, it was done to both sides of the bed. The oddest thing is that the bed has no rust so I don't understand why it was done. I may get new bed sides one of these days or a new bed if i can find one in ohio that isnt worse than mine.

I will keep updated. The first thing that needs done is an exhaust. It is so freakin loud, sounds like a derby car.

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

Should I do shorty headers or go with classic manifolds or ram horns? I'm not in this for speed really more for looks and fun.

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

I prefer full length headers or block huggers myself. With that being said of the ones mentioned I'd do shorty headers.

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

Thanks mj. I just checked your build also looks great. At this point I'm probably just going to put some 40 series flowmasters to quiet it down to drive it. When I get ready to bag it after the beginning of the year I will redo the exhaust so it doesn't hang below the frame, as that could be a small problem lol.

looks like a nice truck

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

I have a question about the rear suspension. This truck is equipped with leaf springs. When changing it over to bags is the best option trailing arms? I have read multiple posts and that seems to be the preferred setup. I just wanted to know what you guys thought?

I have finally got some things done and took some pictures.
- got a new grille from a donor in a junkyard. Still no headlight bezels though.
- installed my new Spin Tech 3000 mufflers, sounds really good now, definately better than open headers.
- Now all I have to do is tune this engine up to stop backfiring through the carb now.

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

I don't want to afend you but the grille you just got is from a Chevy I don't think it holds a candle to the four eyes GMC grille you had, is the truck a GMC of Chevy?

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

I dont take offense. Everyone has their own opinion. I just have never liked the quad light look. I like the chevy look, it seems a lot cleaner and smoother looking. Although the red GMC that was on the cover of street trucks last month was pretty sweet. By the way mine is a Chevy, and the person i got the truck from put a brand new chevy core support in but put a GMC grille in ???

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

I fully respect your point of view, I happen to love 4 eyes for some reason. But since it is a chevy I agree it should look like a Chevy, have a FUN build

I have finally decided to post an update.

I said I wasn't going to do it because I finally had a project that ran. Oh well I decided to fully disassemble the truck this weekend (with some help from my 5 yr old daughter). I have to replace the floor pans and fix some of the work the previous owner had done. I am going to attempt to take the cab and bed off this week.

So much for being able to drive it.

I am hopefully getting it ready for some Porterbuilt equipment around Christmas time.

Re: My first C10 build, can't wait.

I have a question. As far as rack and pinion steering ould an 89 mustang rack and pinion be the setup needed? There is one locally for $40, would it be worth it?

More disassembly of the truck this week. The bed is off and the electrical is taken out. The only thing left is to get some guys over to get this cab off the frame. Then it is onto the floors.

I welded up the heater hole and started cutting out some other cancer spots to fix. I hope to have the firewall shaved by this weekend and start capping off the wire channel soon.
