88-98 6 lug disc brake upgrade
 

I have a 1995 Yukon 4x4 with 6.5 diesel. I would like to upgrade my brakes with 4 wheel disc and possibly going bigger brakes in the front. Does anyone know if the newer Chevy trucks are bigger and or compadable? I’m thinking along the line of how you can put 4th gen fbody brakes on the older camaro and firebirds. Not necessarily a brand new kit although that info would be helpful. I can’t seem to find any threads on this topic.

Yes. Takes modding but all you need for the back is the backing plates, rotors and calipers. For the front you need the spindles and a reemer to make the tie rods fit. 99- something is 13" front rotors, at some point [14 maybe] they went to 14" rotors from the factory. This only works with the 4x4's as far as the front goes so your lucky.

Just to clarify. I can use all 4 corners from a 99 plus donor truck? Will the rear backing plates off of the 99 plus bolt up on the 88-98?
On the front: use the 99plus spindle,rotor, and caliper? But I will need to reem the new spindle to accept my old tie rods? Why won’t the stock spindle work?What about the brake lines? The abs sensor is in the hub so it shouldn’t interfere?

I swapped to GMT800 knuckles on my 3/4 ton.

Your swap would be similar, going from 1/2 ton to 1/2 ton.

**I know you have a 1/2 ton, and this is a similar swap. I am just posting this for reference.**

Not directly, hence the "with mods". You have to enlarge the existing holes to make them match up with the new backing plate holes. I might have ground the flange slightly too now that I think about it. Then you have to space the plate with some washers, which you can tell once you mock up everything up. Otherwise yes everything bolts up. I used stuff from an 04 tahoe on my 98 pickup, pretty sure the backing plates were on sale from a trailblazer.

Not a fan of making a bunch of mods so I just thought I'd throw this in the ring so you have more options to consider.

Something that caught my attention on this kit is you don't have to remove or even slide out the axles.

If the kit doesn't interest you, the page said this "All serviceable parts are also available individually."

So it seems at least, that you could get the mounting flange by itself and then do what ever you want from there.

There is a disclaimer about the mounting flange dimensions and original drum size.

You would have to remove the axles to remove the old backing plates.

Those elderado calipers are terrible. The piston is too small for a truck and the parking brake doesn’t hold.



If you do a knuckle swap or a rear bracket swap, you will still be using parts you can get at any parts store.

That was my thought as well. Now I have all oem parts and 2 piston rear calipers made for full size SUV's. Being a 2wd, I had to modify the oem disks for 5x5 lug pattern and will need to with any replacements, but thats something that can be done on the road without much difficulty.

I'm moving toward the newer setup on my 89, but on mine the 2500 front callipers work and S10 rears
