3 spd column parts

Does any one know where to find replacement parts for 3 spd column
shift trucks?
I am looking at a truck with a 3 spd but they put it on the floor,
I would want it back on the column.
Thanks

Re: 3 spd column parts

You can usually fix the column itself.
The bushings on the shift rods are the same as the ones for the Automagic transmissions. They are available.
The original linkage rods and transmission shift paddles, if they were replaced, will be the mildly difficult parts to source. Buy a membership and post a parts wanted thread. Someone will have em.

This thread tells how to adjust one that's hanging up between gears or shifting into two gears at the same time on the 67-72 trucks. It's the same on the 73-87.

It looks like a new column would be in order.

If I could find a column I would still need linkage and arms.
Also what stick parts are different from a straight 6 to v8?

REALLY WISH we didn't throw mine away. I could have sold those linkages or held onto them for another project. Didn't really think anything of it or know any better, couple of things we let go to the bin... :waah:

That column looks a little funky but when we converted my column to floor shift, the internal bits actually had to stay for the 3 on the tree. Thing wouldn't hold itself together without it. so it's probably all in there besides the linkages on the firewall and stuff.

Does any one know what year columns would work?
Bolt in probably all years 73-87, but wiring 85 ,6 & 7?
Didn't the wiring change from 84 to 85?

73-83 are the same. 84-91 went to the dimmer on the column

Re: 3 spd column parts

85-86 CK & 87-91 RV columns will plug right in.
84 is an odd duck. You might end up swapping wiper switches around to make one work. Otherwise it's the same animal as the 85 up column.

78-91 use the same harmonica plug to the turn/brake/hazard controls on the column but prior to 1984 the dimmer and wiper switch are on the floor and dash respectively.

77 & prior you're on your own.

Re: 3 spd column parts

So 85-87 is best case.
78-84 would need work.

Thanks

Re: 3 spd column parts

78-83 would need serious work... dash wiper switch and floor dimmer button.

84 just change the wiper switch if that.

Re: 3 spd column parts

Just revisited the craigslist ad and realized its an 84, naturally.
Another thought, would all of the mechanical parts work from
the older years to use as rebuild parts for the 84 column?

Re: 3 spd column parts

What's damaged on your 86 column?
You're missing the shift rods and bushings... what else?

Usually its just solidified dirty grease that gums em up... clean it out, re-grease, adjust.

The 84 column will fit in an 86. As I stated the only difference MIGHT be the wiper switch.

wayne at gmtiltsteeringcolumn.com might be able to help rebuild yours as well.

Sorry for the confusion, I do not own the truck yet.
It is for sale, it's a 84.
If I end up with it I would want to put it back on the column.
The post above with the craigs list ad shows a pic. of the column.
Looks like the collar where the shift handle goes is messed up, and
it is missing all of the linkage.
I want to find/build a truck with a 3 on the tree for my kids to learn how
to drive a stick with.

Re: 3 spd column parts

Boy dad's a rough customer. Nothing like three on the tree manual to learn on. LOL...

I learned on a beat to death 1979 Datsun 210 five speed. My first manual column shifter was a loose and beat up unit in a 1975 C10. It took a few minutes to Suss how to operate it. Gramps said it's just an H pattern on its side. Still takes a minute to wrap your head around. She locked up on my first 1-2 shift by shifting into both gears... $300 for a running 8' truck with no rust holes.
A couple gallons of diesel, grease, adjustment, and some welding & grinding to build up the bar that fits in the grooves in the arms. Usually they aren't that worn but I didn't have the $ to replace it.

Any 84 and up squarebody column will work.

My first car and stick learning car was a 1970 chevelle 307 3spd on the column.
Ya locked up between gears was part of the learning. Get out open the hood
grab the linkage on the column and unlock it, and hope it didn't roll away.

Re: 3 spd column parts

Didn't have the luxury of just praying. I was on a very steep very rural hill with no houses for miles. I can laugh about it now. Scary stuff back then.
Chocked all four wheels with some rocks and tree branches and thankfully the e-brake worked too. Woulda been walking home for a come along and strap without the e-brake...

GM made a whole heap of G vans, C pickups, and base model A-Bodies with the three speed Saginaw and column shift. I test drove a Chevelle 307 with the Saginaw three on the tree for a buddy.
