I never really started a build thread on this truck so here's one that goes back to the beginning and brings us to now...

I found this truck on a Craigslist ad that said "Make Offer". The truck was at a house that was about to be foreclosed in Las Vegas, Nevada. Most people would have looked away from this truck. Not me. I contacted the guy and got the truck for $200 in February of 2008. So we took a roadtrip...;)

Turns out this ugly truck had a few very cool things about it. It has a 350 in it, but after checking the VIN number, it came stock with a 454. Pretty cool for a half ton shortbed. It also has a factory tach, th400, and a posi 3.73(I later discovered 3.42's) rearend. Someday I would like to put a 454 back in her.

We got the truck home (actually my brother-in-law's house) and the first thing I did was cleaned out the garbage and replaced some body parts. The truck came with another set of front fenders that were decent so I put them in primer and bolted them on. I was able to score a cherry hood from the junkyard for $30...did the same with that. I also found a nice front bumper. My brother-in-law gave me a nice chrome grille. I also ordered a few parts from LMC, new headlight bezels, and grille surround. My buddy Danny freshened up the fender emblems for me.

The 350 in the truck had been sitting for a long long time without an air cleaner or thermostat housing. A few parts had been taken off. I took the valve covers and intake off to inspect the upper internals. Turns out everything looked very clean and it had some pretty nice parts in there. The heads appear that they were built for racing...fancy studs, big rockers, guide plates, beefy push rods. The intake valley had been coated. Everything looked good. I cleaned everything and went back with some used parts that I scored. An Edelbrock Performer intake, HEI distributor, quadrajet, and some chrome valve covers. After installing all the parts and cleaning the fuel system, I put in a battery and it fired up! Runs pretty healthy. I wasn't sure at first, but she lived!:metal:

Next thing was the bed. It had the common rust that these early squarebody's are known for. I was involved in a three way bed trade with my brothers in law. I still had to get mine "fixed" before I could swap it though. Fred hooked me up with some patch work and then he put it in primer. I also threw on my 17" centerlines. No matter what stage you're at on your project, when you put cool wheels on it looks a whole lot better...and keeps you motivated. :)

After that I was able to drive the truck home. At this point I had to deal with a few carb and electrical issues. The bed was later removed (given away). With the bed off, I pressure washed and painted the back half of the frame and suspension (no pics of that). Later, I got another bed from my brother in law's '79. This bed has the drain slots above the fenders and a fuel door. Here's a few more pics, including what she looks like now.:metal:

The next thing I am going to work on is the interior. We've already stripped the dash and all the trim pieces out. I scored a nice dash pad from a fellow board member. I dyed that black along with some door panels that were another junkyard score. My babe removed and cleaned all the interior trim pieces...those are dyed/painted and ready. I got a newer bench seat for it. Until I get the money to reupholster that, it's going to get a sarape (Mexican blanket) seat cover. I wish I had pics of the interior pieces, but I don't. Here's what it looks like inside now...:ito:

Yup, still got it. Now that spring is here I can get more done. I can't wait to spray the interior and get that all together. Thanks for looking.

Thanks! I look forward to some nice weather to work on it some more. This is a budget build so it's been mostly junkyard parts and rattlecans. It's been fun!

After another coat, I let the paint dry a bit, unmasked it and I was able to put in a few of the interior pieces. I need to get a few parts for the driver's side door to put that on together, and I need to get the carpet in before the seat, and I need to re-cover the headliner so I can put in the rest of the trim pieces. Here'e where it's at now....:ito:

I used Kirker Acrylic Urethane Enamal paint. I picked it up online from Autobody Tool Mart. It was very reasonably priced and easy to work with. It's pre-reduced, you just have to add activator at a 3:1 mix. I got a gallon of paint and the reducer for about $80. I still have plenty to do the exterior when I get to that point.

Here's the link:

They have plenty colors to choose from....:ito:
