Okay, I'm not going Harvey Weinstein on you, I just need help identifying this pinion yoke so I can get u-joints and make a driveshaft. It's a GM 12-bolt but the pinion yoke seems non-standard. Those cups are 1-1/16" but that's supposed to be an outside clip u-joint but there are no retaining tabs. My local driveline guy suspects someone ground off the retaining tabs. I'm much more familiar with Ford rear ends; any classic Chevy guys help me out?

This rear end does NOT look like the original one in my '55 sedan.

Here's a better pic with dirt cleaned off. It appears to have the tabs ground away.

I think you're right. Why the _____ would someone do that?

Because they dropped a ____ needle bearing (or two) into the bottom of the cup, then thought the joint was too long for the ____ pocket.

Sounds like the voice of experience, lol!

Yeah, well, I screwed up a lot of stuff in my younger days. I never ground out the tabs though. I just fixed the bearings. :smoke:

Would an inner c-clip style u joint help him?

Could be the above suggestion, or it could be that the kid at the local Parts Superstore sold the wrong U-joint and the owner decided to make it work.

Possibly. I don't know if there are any inner clip style U-joints which would fit into that yoke.

Re: Pictures of my rear end

Here's a list of U-joints from Randy's Looks like there is a bunch of different styles and spreads. Assuming that it's a 1310, 1330 would be different yet.

When you save and expend the last photo that is super clear you can see what's left of the tab on the right hand side where I circled it. If you were desperate you could build it up with weld and then take a Dremel tool or die grinder to it but that is a bit chancy. The price of a new yoke is probably inexpensive insurance against problems or vibrations.

Yeah, I already ordered a new yoke. Shame the PO had to ruin a $100 yoke instead of buying a $15 u-joint. Evidently he just centered the u-joint by eye, then clamped it down. Doesn't sound safe to me.

Here's a Craigslist listing of a rear end that looks a little like yours. Even has the square bosses near the axle tubes.

Hope this helps in identifying your yoke.

They do walk amongst us. Same kind of guy who will bust a 100 dollar part in a wrecking yard to get to a part that might sell for 2.00 .

The way my luck runs if I had tried to run it that way the U joint cup would have slipped sideways and I'd have the driveshaft shaking and baking as I went down the road.
