here's my new project soon to be "daily driver"

Went and picked this truck up today in taylorsville n.c., its a pretty solid truck other than the cab suppports and some minor rust in the bottum portion of the truck. the bed is very solid with only surface rust. The truck came with almost everything I need to get it running. I plan on doing some paint work under the hood and in the bed , then getting the motor and trans in and getting it running and driving it most days. I wanted a truck that wasn't so nice that I couldn't drive it , this was the 8th truck that I looked at and it was the first that the price matched the condition of the truck.

check out this fix for using the wrong radiator, does anyone know if the three big holes are for a factory mirrors and what kind? it had hideous mirrors on it.

Re: here's my new project soon to be "daily driver"
Excellent! Looks like someone started on it then gave up. What's the engine and trans?
That'll make a great DD! |
Re: here's my new project soon to be "daily driver"
The big holes are factory for the sport mirrors. My 72 has no mirrors on it right now, I originally was going to tac in a piece of metal behind the door exterior and get rid of them with some filler, however there is no access to do so without tearing into the door.

Re: here's my new project soon to be "daily driver"
That is a pretty ingenious way to fab up mounts for a later model radiator. Never seen that before. :)
Nice lookin' truck. Gary |
Re: here's my new project soon to be "daily driver"
Looks good.Not a bad DD.As asked what Engine/tranny?
Cw72gmc,tack a nail to a piece of metal the size of the hole. You can then hold the piece by the nail and tack it in.(tip from the tips thread)Just grind the nail off and finish the area. |

Re: here's my new project soon to be "daily driver"
Looks like it will make a good driver. Go with the 350, never been much for the 305's. Matter of fact I have one I have been trying to give away for years...no takers.

Hey Dewayne!!!....looks like a good find...so you went by my house then!!!

Re: here's my new project soon to be "daily driver"
I don't think you can even use that passenger side mirror. Looks like it's below your line of sight from the driver's seat.

Re: here's my new project soon to be "daily driver"
There you go drive that thing, thats why it was made; looks great! Congratulations on that find!

Ok so I had some time to work on the truck this weekend, and I'm off till the first of the year so I plan on really getting going on this truck.
I started working on the manifolds trying to put new studs in them, I heated them with the torch and was able to get three of them out, and break two of them off. One of them was already broke off, so I step drilled them till I got to 5/16 of an inch drill bit (which was the right size bit for the 3/8-16 threads) ,then used a tap to work the remaining thread material out. It wasn't a good time ,but I was able to save them. After that I blasted the manifolds and coated them with some eastwood manifold paint using a foam brush. They turned out pretty nice. I was also able to get the engine painted and somewhat put back together. The po had painted it ford blue which I was not crazy for. |

Everytime I look at the truck I find something new wrong with it. I can't believe I didn't notice this when I looked at the truck, but someone had cut a hole in the heater box and then covered it with duct tape and painted it black.
Luckily I have a good outer box laying around to replace this one. |
