Rear AC Hose Question/s
 

Was able to get my hands on, what looks like a very nice, original Harrison rear ac evaporator unit. Thanks Randy500!

The Vintage Air Gen lV SureFit system I had installed a few weeks ago uses #6 and #8 hoses...which seems to mean I will need to use those sizes, for the rear unit, to be able to tie into the existing Gen lV system.

Question is --- The original hoses were 3/8th and 5/8th ID, but I can't use that size because of the Vintage Air system. The Harrison unit's exit and entry pipes fits the 3/8th and 5/8th sizes. If I run the Vintage Air #6 and #8 hoses all the way to the back is the there a way to connect them to the entry and exit pipes of the evaporator? A step fitting or connector or something?

attached is a schematic for putting in a dual system. I think you can go to the appropriate hose size for the AC unit after the T.

After a few hours last night of searching, I don't think 3/8th ID ac hose exists anymore unless I place a minimum order of 1,000 feet from China!

As of now, I'm looking at using the Vintage Air #6 and #8 hoses to the back. There are screw on fitting on the evaporator (attached picture) and if I can find some that will fit the #6 and #8 hoses I should be good to go...

I replaced my hoses with Goodyear Galaxy barrier hose.

I think the biggest problem I had was at the "T" under the hood. I could not find a "T" with the proper in's and out's from my replacement hose to the replacement hose/manifold I purchased.

I had to make the T.

As far as the metal hose fittings on your evaporator, I think I bought some on eBay that worked.

Yeah - I'm thinking matching original sizes of 5/8th and 3/8th hoses to the new Vintage Air #6 and #8 hoses under the hood will be the big problem. Especially since I don't have the mad-skillz to make the "T's" like you did...

If I can find the screw on fittings for #6 and #8 hoses to use on that rear evaporator...then back up front I should be able to just "T" in the new #6 hose to the existing #6 hose and the same with the #8 hoses. Sounds easy enough...

After reviewing the drawing - it is the #6 and #10 hoses that go all the way to the back. Not the #8 hose.

So now I need to figure out how to either - make #6 and #10 hoses fit these original fittings (in picture) or find some fittings that will fit the new hoses and screw on to the original evaporator!

good luck, I myself will be putting in a dual system on my 70' K20, but im doing two vintage air units. One under dash and one under the front seat. And yep, being a spy in the houston area. My burbs in waco at my in-laws, more space and stuff to work on it up there.

Just a FYI...
3/8 is -6 (6/16) and
5/8 is -10 (10/16)
I did my set up a long time ago, but I got all my fitting at the time at a local van conversion spot. ( pre Google lol).

maybe these will help?
Most fittings are aluminum, you could weld something up between a new one and the original incase the nut is different .

Yeah - I can find #6 and #10 hose fittings no problem. Like you pointed out...it is the nut sizes for the Harrison evaporator fittings that are different. And man I wish I had the skillz and equipment to weld things, but no-can-do there.

Wish you were closer, we could do them for you. Most hot rod / race car shops can weld aluminum. I`m sure there`s somebody near you. Good luck!

Thanks - I was just given the name of "South Texas Truck Air". It's over on the north east part of town, but the guy on the phone said they had step down fittings that will work. Going to try and squeeze a trip out there tomorrow and check it out. Guy made it sound like they have everything under the sun related to vehicle AC stuff.

South Texas Truck Air does have nearly anything needed for climate control! Cool old school place with a walk up counter and a couple of older guys that know their stuff!
They had the step down 90degree fittings that screw right on to the evaporator!
I went ahead and picked up 30' of #6 and #10 hoses (probably 5 feet too long, but...) and 'T' fittings and 2 new blower wheels since one of the originals was bent.
BAM!

I don't have any tools for this kind of stuff. Limited on anything really, that won't fit in the cabinet in my garage. And with 4 boys and all their stuff, for multiple sports and activities each, in the garage that cabinet isn't large to begin with!
What I think I am going to do is run the hoses and get the evaporator mounted myself and then get the guy who installed the Vintage Air system to install the fittings and misc. parts needed to finish things...

Thinking about efficiency.
My plan is to try and run the hoses along the passenger side, which is opposite than what was stock.
Stock had the hoses going down the drivers side then crossing to the passenger side underneath the cab...then out to the front.
I roughly walked off the differences and by eliminating the cross-under I could potentially shorten the hoses by up to 5 maybe 6 feet.
I really don't know the answer, but wouldn't this help with efficiency?

I seem to remember someone on here ran their lines down the passenger side. But I also think they were using an aftermarket rear evaporator setup.

You need to change to straight fittings in the rear as I don't think you can get around the fan motor with 90's when bringing the hoses in from the other side.

Well...I think you're right! I'll take the evaporator to South Texas Truck Air next week to make sure we get it set up correctly.

I think there are pitcure in my suburban build thread of my lines. I ran them like factory. It took a very long day to install the ac hoses and overhead unit. In Hartrods subuperbuild thread he has some pitcures also

Thanks - I just zoomed through the build in the link below your post. I found where you posted about the front air system, but nothing about the rear system / hoses. Is there a link for that?
