Satin / Flat / Matte Black Paint?

Has anyone painted their ride satin, flat, or matte black. I would like to see pics and know what product you used.

hotrod flatz makes satin paint (read, NOT PRIMER) in tons of different colors. I've heard mixed results on the quality. You could also get a flattener added to the clear for a satin look.

Re: Satin / Flat / Matte Black Paint?

flatening agents will make the paint porous like primer and will not hold up. make sure whatever you use is a finish SEALED paint. We prefer Sherman Williams Polane for low gloss finishes especially our chassis black

Here is one I did. I used a bc/cc with satin clear. Just the red, the white is single stage, it has a little more shine than the red.

what poduct is the white?

I am thinking about going with SEM hot rod black. I see that hot rod flatz has many colors to choose from, but have heard quite a few mixed feelings on the product.

I like that red btw.

If you are going black...just use Rustoleum in the quart or John Deer Blitz Black. Its cheap and is an industrial paint. Here is a 66 Mustang I painted with Rustoleum about 2 years ago and it sits outside...looks the exact same as it did when I painted it. I have like $30 into paint.

JUST REMEMBER, if you use an un-activated paint, NEXT time you decide to paint your truck, you are going to have CRAP loads of problems.

I mixed it 4:1 or so with mineral spirits. Just search on yahoo for a roll on paint job. I painted mine with a HVLP gun, but thinned it like everyone does for a roll on paint job.

Rustoleum is a rubberized paint. you will have a hell of a time if you ever want to sand it or paint over it.

Re: Satin / Flat / Matte Black Paint?

I've been considering going with a satin black for my truck as well. I've read mixed reviews about using a single stage, base by itself, or a base/satin clear. My painter buddy doesn't want to paint satin black because you can't sand it after your paint, so basically if you get any runs or trash in your finish you have to sand then re-paint.

Rochlow - that looks mean and nasty - exactly what I am looking for! Did you go single stage, an epoxy primer, a base alone, or a base/satin clear?

Re: Satin / Flat / Matte Black Paint?

how did the flatz spray. I have heard some bad things about it not laying down well. Did you use more than a gallon?

I am REALLY close to ordering the SEM Hotrod Black kit. too bad it only comes in quarts.

I used n.a.p.a farm paint but is going chalkey but was cheap and it helped me learn how to spray,no pro but how to set gun etc.I should of put some satin clear or what ever your suppose to use after, but I didn.t,I think the flat black paint has ran it,s course, here anyway, everybody and their dog is painting flat black, from spray bomb to real nice

Re: Satin / Flat / Matte Black Paint?

The kit came with a gallon of base, a quart of hardner and a quart of reducer. Which made a gallon and a half of sprayable material. It took pretty much all of it to do the one coat on the inside of the entire tube and two coats on everything else

The tech sheet said to spray two wet coats. We sparyed the hood first and had some issues with the gun that we had to fix and ended up spraying three coats on the hood.

Now looking back I wish I would have sprayed three coats on everything as the finish is still a matte finish, but it is just smoother with three..

I'm used to be really picky when it came to paint, but I have to keep in mind I'm building a hot rod style truck, not a show truck.

Gallon of PAINT. If you say BASE, people think it is a base coat/clear coat.;)

Hey, I use rustoleum on a car of mine but I am thinking about trying to do it right on a truck project. What is a good Primer to use under it? Is it possible or necessary to clear coat over it. And what would be a good clear coat choice be?
