1970 C-10 Handling issues.

I would like to request some assistance.

I’m having issues with horrible stability, handling. When I drive down the road it feels like the truck is “ wondering” all over the road.

I bought a 1970 C-10 and have used parts from a 1972 c-10 to convert it from drum brakes to disk brakes. Took it in for an alignment, alignment guy says spindles are not compatible and that’s why I don’t have any stability going down the road. Is this true ? I thought they would work, specially since I installed new ball joints, tie rods(inner & outer).

Any suggestions ?

The parts are compatible. Post some pictures of the setup both front and rear. Till you get it worked out and get a good alignment under it its not going to drive that good.

Did you remove the center link and re-install it?

Sometimes people get the center link backwards. I understand this will make the truck drive and steer incorrectly.

The tie rods should be on the backside of the center link with the castle nuts facing the front of the truck.

Here is a thread.....

Just wondering.

I believe the ball joints are different are they not? Did you use the 70 control arms and ball joints or did you use the newer ones?

Yes IIRC the 67-70 balls joints are smaller than the 71 and up. The guy at the shop stating the spindles are not compatible might be referencing the ball joint sizes being incompatible. Too small of ball joints on the tie rod into the spindle would cause some undesirable handling I would imagine.

The swap works well with the correct combination of parts. So tell us what parts went where and what new parts you used and what they were for and we should be able to get this worked out. I am running the 73 and up stuff on my 66 and it works great with the right stuff. In the 60 to 66 section up in the FAQ section there are links to doing the disc brake swap and what combination of parts to use.

When you get what feels like random lane wandering, I always want to look at the outer tie rod ends, first.

They tend to get sloppy and the steering gets "twitchy", for sure. (a too-small ball joint that's a little slopy in the mounting slot would give you a similar issue, too, I bet)
