Heads- 305 or 350???
 

What is the best way to tell if you have 305 or 350 heads? Is there a casting number that will give it away by the valve springs.

Hi all, the casting numbers on my heads are 14014416, GM 36 and GM 33, also there is a K 22.

Are these 305 or 350 heads, I hope they are the latter of the two!

Look at it the bright way. Does your engine ping there´s an easy way out http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/smile.gif With 58cc heads compression can creep up on you really fast.

As you probably know there are two more common sizes when it comes to combustion chambers, and those are 64cc´s (usually performance heads, such as fuelies) and 76cc´s, which are everywhere on 350 equipped vehicles from 73 and up. Some 76cc heads are of a very good casting but ppl in general doesn´t know about them, so they should be cheap http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/smile.gif Bear in mind though that some 350 heads also can come with 1.84" intake valves.

Stay away from 624 castings. They are the lightest casting ever. I have no personal experience with them but a very knowledgeable enginebuilder/friend of me avoids them like plague.

Most 327 - 2bbl castings were very small port and they do not have accesory mounting holes plus you never know what your getting unless you get them checked and magged first. Old heads have their share of cracks and sunken valves . Don't feel bad. My dad just bought a set of 305 heads that had been opened up for larger valves and had a decent valve job done with new springs and guides etc. seems its the hot ticket for stocker rebuilds these days. With dished pistons he's got 9.3:1 compression and gobs of low end torque and thats exactly what you need in trucks like his with 3.08 gears.

Don't put those 305 heads on a 350. Trust me, i did it on the old Longhorn. They were free, and I still feel I got ripped off. Only thing I would use them for is weight in the bed on a snow day.
