1986 Silverado, and 3.5" dash speakers...
 

I want to replace my dash speakers with better speakers. Mine are original and are just about in the grave. I just put in a new cd player, that will put out about 20-25 watts per channel.
Looking for something so I don't have to modify anything. What brand, model do you recommend?

lmc sells them and i think they are avilbe at wall mart not sure of the watt rating though

A while back I was thinking the same with my dash speakers. But, it's relatively costly to replace them with a quality pair. I know you mentioned that you don't want to mod anything, but you may be better off wiring a typical size (i.e. 6x9s) speakers into the cab, say in rear of the cab. You'll get a better sound from them than those in the dash and may be a bit less costly.

You can get decent 3.5' s for about $50- pioneer, blaupunkt, infinity. You might as well use some decent speakers if you are going to take the hassle of removing the dash and installing them. I have an extra set of pioneers that I took out somewhere since I will be going back with a custom stereo because you can't get a whole lotta sound out of a 3.5!

I am going with a custom set up, either 6.5 in the door, or kick panels.With some 10's in a box.
Would it even be worth it to replace the 3.5's? They would just be running off head unit power.
Thinking about replacing the 4x10's in the back with some thing, just don't know with what.
Any ideas?

pioneer still sells 4x10 3 ways I am pretty sure, got a set of them too. The 3.5 will definately add some "high" to you combo. I used to have a set of kenwood 3.5 that made a huge difference in sound quality, backed up by 2 10's and some mini dome tweeters.

pioneer, sony, polk, kenwood all have 4x10's. I have been checking online steady for the last week.
Maybe some more brands I overlooked...

When my wife bought me a new Pioneer cd stereo for Christmas, I put 6x9's behind my seat, and new 4" speakers in the corners of the dash. I had to modify the dash and rear mounts, but they fit.

what exactly did you have to do to the dash?
I have mine off right now, and it's tight on drivers side. I don't want to cut the dash pad, so far it does not have a scratch on it!

If you have 4X10 mounts for the cab corners, you can mount 6X9 speakers to them with a little bit of work. Swap the mounts side to side (L to R, R to L) and you'll have extra room for large magnets. A friend was able to get some rather large 6X9 Pioneers in the cab corers using this method.

Cab corner brackets used to be common in stereo shops, but nobody carries them any more. I found a set in a junkyard after about 2 years of searching. One of these days I might even mount them...

thanks i have heard of this before. Mune has no corner mount brackets right now because the previous owner was running his 6x9 in there own boxes. so if i take the empty brackets i have and switch the sides i will be able to mount 6x9's? anyone got a pic of this ?

You can also mount a pair of 5 1/4 speakers in the center hole of the dash.

When I had my system in my truck, I was running a single IDQ 12" behind the seat with an amp on either side; one for the sub and one for some 6x9"s in the cab corners, and some 3.5"s in the dash running off of the deck. Sounded awesome this way.

I don't have any photos. I saw some once on another Chevy site, which is what prompted my friend to try it. He sold the truck last month, though.

If you're going custom, you could just go with tweeters in place of the 3.5s for your high freqency and then replace your 4x10s with a more popular size, like 6x9s. Then, fab up an enclosures/brackets for the 6x9s. :cool:

The first question I have is: Are you going for sounds quality, or just pure volume?

If you're not too worried about sound quality, just throw a set of 3.5" speaker from Infinity, Kenwood, or Eclipse in there, a pair of 6x9's behind the seat, and probably a new headunit to get some more power to them.

If you want more sound quality, just say so and I can give you a run down on what to look for.
