500 c.i. cadillac in a 82 chevy truck

i have an 82 chevy truck that needs a motor. i have a friend that has a 500 c.i. cadillac motor i can have to put in the truck. has anyone done this in a truck? if so what problems will i encounter or is it a fairly easy swap? thanks for the help.

if that's going to be my biggest problem i can handle that. and like your sig says, i like to "think outside the box" when it comes to my cars(and trucks).

A few people have done the swap. its not terribly difficult. you need to find a bop transmission bc the caddy bellhousing is different but they arent terribly scarce. also the motor mounts have to be changed

trans adapter and motor mounts here, you will have to get a rear sump oil pan unless you already have one.

Got the info you need with pics Its a bolt in with all GM parts there may be a bit of firewall massaging necessary at least on 67-72 I put one in a 68 burb and am putting one in a 69 burb. email me for info and pics I'll be more than happy to help ya out. You will love the torque this swap provides and as long as you stay out of the secondaries it gets as good as or better mileage than a 350 SBC I know from experience got both and my burb gets better mileage than my 68 C-10 350 th400 308 rear with 31x10.5-15

You can bump the HP and torque with a new cam. Visit this site: http://www.500cid.com/

The 500 is lighter than a 454! Do everything you need to do do the driverside valve cover. Once the engine is installed, you can't remove it. You may have to grind the brake boost a tad for clearance. Advance adaptors has a transmission adaptor.

Re: 500 c.i. cadillac in a 82 chevy truck

thanks for all the help. the motor is supposed to have a transmission with it. how good that is i don't know.

suville i will send you and email. i'd like to get some pics and info from someone that has done this. i'm glad to hear that it should get decent gas mileage. it's not a truck that i'll be driving much but it's good to have decent mpg.

right now it has manuel brakes so maybe i should look into a small brake booster when i go to power brakes.

i'll have to check out the web sites and see what i can find for this project.

This swap is fairly easy. I'm doing the same swap in my '86. All I did for the mounts was flip the sbc mount perches to the opposite side of the frame. This will angle them forward. You will have to do some trimming to the perches to clear your steering. Once that is done, you can mount stock cadillac mounts to them and the Cad motor will drop right in. You will need to trim the pinch weld between the firewall and the floor to clear the driver's side head. I got pics around somewhere. I'll try to get some up.

Here are the pics I have from mock up.

This is a stock eldorado mount bolted to the sbc perch. I had to trim one mounting tab off to clear the sterring.

You can see how close it comes to hitting the stock brake booster. I'll probably get a smaller one someday.

You can see where I trimmed my firewall for the driver's side head. (I still need to stitch it back up)

I'd kill to have a caddy engine in my truck. My dads old 69' stepside had a 472 and the caddy disc rearend in it.

Re: 500 c.i. cadillac in a 82 chevy truck

I've always wanted to do this swap because I think a 500 inch Caddy motor would be great in a truck, especially if you pull a trailer.

The pics on the motor mounts are very helpful. You've gotta love GM and the way they make most of their interchangeable. Definately can't say that about Fords.....You had better know the MONTH your vehicle was made when you go to the parts store. Example: They made a 351 Cleveland, a 351 Windsor, and a 351M, and very few of the parts interchange between them.

That's why I have always owned GM trucks.

If you are getting the trans with the engine it will have a 13" tailshaft on it. so you will have to have the driveshaft shortened.

As far as the brake booster clearance I plan on using a hydro boost with the accumulator flipped over so the lines come out the bottom and it gives more clearance for the cast valve covers (which ya need for the shaft rocker set up from MTS) and using one of I believe its "captain fab" anyway hes an Idaho boy too up in north Idaho makes a nice set up. and it will give you plenty of stopping power!

you're not kidding about the ford stuff. i've always had chevy stuff and a couple of years ago i decided i wanted something different and bought some ford stuff and you really have to know what you have and what it will match up with because their products aren't user friendly. i still want something different, that's why i'm thinking about the caddy motor in my chevy truck. ya are giving me alot of good info.

David Freiburger did that when he was editor at Car Craft over a dozen years ago but the recipient was an El Camino.

The project goals were pretty much how fast for how cheap can we go. They pulled a Caddy engine out of a running rust bucket, gave it nothing more than a rattle-can rebuild and put it in the Elky. I don't recall what it ran but traction was a big issue.

Grand torino grill I believe 2 inch chop caddilac tilt teloscopic steering column billit dash autometer gagues caddilac door handles torino bucket seats mahogony bed floor caddy 472 with a th400 tranny shift kit disc brake caddy rear end. Custom front bumper dimond pressed tail gate and louvered hood. If memory serves me correct. It was a real hotrod his biggest problem was getting it to hook up on launch.
