Dumb question of the day...

I installed my clutch plate and now I’m thinking I installed it backwards.

Does the side with the longer splined shaft face the transmission or the flywheel?

It’s a GMC 305 v6 with a 3 speed Muncie manual.

I take it that you bought a new one and it doesn't work right. Clutch discs for a V6 eng are different from a chev. most parts places will give you a disc for a chev and they are different and won't work. People have had their old ones rebuilt as the proper one is not easy to find.
even finding rebuilders is not easy there was one that use to do them in portland.
you might want to check it out on here and you might find something under the trans section. http://6066gmcclub.com/index.php
some one here may have the solution for you though

Re: Dumb question of the day...

I actually had a local rebuilder do the flywheel, pressure plate and friction plate.

So, it’s the correct items, I just didn’t pay attention when I removed it.

I hope it’s long spline side facing the trans, but all of the pictures I’ve seen on the interwebs have it facing the other way.

it is I think backwards to the the chev install . ask on the 60-66 site I remember that it was brought up on there many times over the years. I don't remember the answer but that it was peculiar. that is the best that I can do for you
someone here should know also, but most of them toss the v6 and install something else. then there are the ones who swear by them

Smooth side towards the flywheel and snout towards the trans. I was able to install a chevy style disc on mine by machining the snout down on the disc. Works fine now.

While looking through the manual and online, I noticed most of the clutch plates had the splined shaft with the longer shaft facing the flywheel. Apparently, like some other things with these trucks, there are certainly differences.

TJ is correct.. proof:
