How to measure wheel studs?
 

Im sure at least one out of five people come across this problem, but Google isnt helping. I need new studs on the front axle. They gotta be longer. I can get one off the truck with no problem, but the parts places can only look up by make/model/year and Jegs/Summit sells by exact measurements. What do I do when I have the stud in my hand to know what to buy?
I called Summit and they have longer studs. I just dont know which ones I need. "Wheel Studs, Press-In, 1/2-20 in. x 3 in. Long, .615 in. Diameter Knurl, Set of 5" doesnt really mean much to me.

Id take one of the studs to the store and find a lug that will fit it

Id rather not eyeball measure something that has that many digits after the decimal. Its inviting problems.
Plus I need longer studs by at least 1/2". No one local has them. They HAVE to be ordered Summit or Jegs, which requires precise measurments.

i use a caliper to measure with// harbor frieght has them with electrronic display for readout, avery handy tool to have at quite reasonable prices

Yup I'd take my calipers,one of the old studs and one of the old lug nuts.

Just have the parts store look up the origional stud for your truck and look at the specs for it. Then get one how ever much longer you need.
O'Reilly's web site lists the specs. This is for a 74 K10 with a 350:

Just select your truck search for wheel stud. And BTW a decent parts store should be able to do this for you, but I know those are becoming few and far between.

I tried that too. Unfortunately, the studs from the parts store dont have any info on them, just the application. So I would still need to measure, lol.

Harbor freight does have some decent caliper prices.

take the part number from the oriellys... dorman for example and type in yahoo... dorman wheel stud catalog. boom. done. get the measurements from that wheel stud and get one thats longer. simple

You dont even have to do that. The specs are online.

Just search for your application. Find out what you have then you can get them from Summit ect. if you cant get them in the store. Bout as easy as it gets.

I thought that number referred to the twist for the lug nuts. Am I completely wrong? cus when I search 1/2 20 on summit, I get lug nut results.

The numbers that you are referring to is the stud diameter and the thread pitch in teeth per inch. If you originally had a 7/16"-20 RH thread wheel stud, then you should go back with a 7/16"-20 RH thread wheel stud. This should be more of what you are looking for...

I saw those too but I was under the assumption that the shoulder was longer on mine.

You're right, the front studs on your truck should have a longer shoulder. The only option I see without going to a smaller knurl diameter is this one. The knurl is slightly larger and you may have to drill out the hubs a hair, but more than likely they'll press in with just a little more force.

Those seem to be exact except for the knurl. Will it be close enough to work?

There is a difference of 15 thousandths of an inch between the two, with the new one being the larger one. I would think that they would press-in fine, with just a little more resistance than a stock replacement stud.

Did you ever purchase and install longer studs? I want longer ones too and hard to find the right ones, as you have noted....

The guy who posted the Dorman info ultimately saved my butt. Goto https://www.dormanproducts.com/catal...ec10_Part2.pdf and find your application, then goto summit and type in the knurl and the turn. Like 7/16 20 .565 or whatever it is

Hi

Bringing the thread back from the dead.

I have a 1965 C10 but it has more modern hubs/ discs. How do I identify these to be able to identify the stud? I know that it is 5x5, the studs are 1/2 inch diameter.

Or should I just remove a stud and identify it by measuring it? Being in the UK it is hard to just pop to a shop with a stud and find someone capable of identifying it / supplying a replacement, so I will need to order online.
