i found a possible deal on a 4-53 or 4-71 detroit that ran when parked cause it was to out dated for its use anymore .

its in a genset unit and was to complicated for young people to figure out at the place it was used so they got a newer unit that was stupid proof for them to run and just parked this unit .

i have no clue what size 4 cyl it is but if i can get it i would like to know what i have to deal with . then if i can get it to run maybe what it would take to stuff it in a project truck . . . but thats much later if it happens .

Nice find.

I always wanted a small Detroit Gen Set, but could never find one locally.

I've had all the 2 stroke leaktroit fun I can stand already but no idea about these smaller ones..

these guys seem to know the difference tho, and may be a good place for your other questions..

good luck!

Definitely a 4-71- 71's had the rocker cover hold downs in the center of the rocker cover, 53's used machine 4 machine screws around the perimeter of the rocker cover. You'll have to confirm that it is the correct rotation for what you're putting it in, also what side the blower and exhaust should be on. The governor will probably need to be changed and several parts of the cooling system. There are some very helpful guys on the Detroit Diesel Enthusiast FB group. This is one of the moderators on that page. http://www.hassingerdiesel.com/location

Agree, I was thinking the same thing.

Curious to what truck you have in mind. I'm all for Detroit's and love swaps, but keep in mind that they are surprisingly heavy.

Re: help i.d. a detroit 2stroke 4 cyl engine size

thanks for the help guys .

it is a 2 big center round nob hold down valve cover .

also the exhaust is driver side and blower pass side with bell housing in the rear .

if it had been a 4-53 maybe a k30 truck but since its a 4-71 then i think a 88 gmc 7000 dump i have would like it more and handle it better .

if i wind up getting this unit then i will update this thread as it goes .

well 2 phone calls today and the 1st got me to the 2nd and the unit is NOT in there system . all i need to do is take a few pics and a pic of the serial tag # and email them to this guy and if its still not found in the system via the serial # then he will give me a paper that says its free and clear and i can have it .

sounds like i need to dig out the pintle hook for the truck :sumo::metal:

and the 1st guy remembered the unit from YEARS ago and said its still there ? ? ? ha ha ha

Definitely a different govenor is in order. You may want to look for a different camshaft too. 471 generators were usually set up to run at a steady1800 rpm. Using it with the generator specifications means you will give up low end torque. A generator is designed to start up and go to working RPM with no load. Then when the generator is put on line the govenor is set up to keep the engine at 1800 +/- 100.
