Where to get NP205 overhauled

I'm hoping to find someone local who is knowelagable at overhauling the NP205. I am east of Waco Texas. Anyone with good recommendations would be appreciated.

It probably just needs seals, drives good and shifts fine. Y'all have me thinking i may go thru it myself, what's to lose. My initial thought was to find someone with a good rep semi-close and havee it done to save me some time.

sweetk30- where did you get parts?

PropMan - I am in 100% agreement with sweetk30. The NP205 is stupid simple, and I just did my first one just a few months ago. I highly recommend the rebuild kit from Offroad Design It may be possible to purchase a cheaper kit, but those guys are fantastic and even kindly answered some stupid questions I had.

I enjoyed the process so much I'm probably going to do another one as much for fun as for profit. It's quite relaxing to clean everything up, get it painted, and assemble it back together. Sort of an adult puzzle.

BUT - having said all of that, my overall project would have been better off had I spent the money rather than the time. I was quoted $385 for a "seals and bearing" rebuild of mine at a local transmission shop. I have no idea if that was a good price, but it seemed so given the rebuild kit was $198 retail. I'm sure they get a better wholesale deal and may have re-used bearings that were perfectly fine that I replaced simply because they were in the kit. If it's something you want to do I'm confident you can do it. But don't discount the time and convenience factor of dropping it off at a transmission shop. The shop won't need to be 205 specialists, but given how common they were and mostly still are I'd bet some old fella in the shop would qualify as an expert.

Re: Where to get NP205 overhauled

I farmed out both my SM465 and NP205 at the same time. 375 parts 450 labor 35 tax Total 860. Basically 225 labor for the trans and transfer each. I saved time, I didn't want to dicker with them. But I pulled and reinstalled myself and by myself. I did the clutch and oil pan the weekend they were gone. The big labor money is in pulling them out and putting them back in. If you can't do that, then add another seven hundred to a thousand dollars.

So back to the original question, who is good in your area? If you're not getting an answer to that then start working the phones. You will eventually find someone that gets excited about the old gear boxes, when you do... that's your shop! You've gotten prices from two of us so you will now know what to expect.

Work the phones, talk. :chevy:

Thanks for the replys all. I've decided to buy a 205 from ORD ready to go, and save this one for my Blazer project(that'll be in the near future). Then i can overhaul it at my leisure. I need to get my K2500 back on the road and this seems to be my best option just now.

Can't go wrong with an ORD. Post pics when you get it running. :chevy:
