Problem w/ Speedometer in 04 Chevy

This past week my speedometer started messing up. I was on my way home on Interstate with the truck on cruise about 75 mph. I went to accelerate to pass a car faster w/out disengaging cruise. Once I passed the car my speedometer never came down. It was stuck and would go up but would not come back down below 45 at a complete stop. Over the weekend it dropped back down and was acting normal until my trip back to FW. Same thing happened but this time the spedometer continued to rise until it pegged out at 130 +. I come to a complete stop and it is at 75 mph. I don't have a clue what is going on but both times it has happened with cruise on while I was accelerating with the pedal to pass someone. I turned cruise off and still did not drop. Anyone got any ideas? I would like to maybe have something to tell the dealer to look at. Thanks in advance to any help!

Gotta get a new one, we had a whole batch of bad stepper motors (the lil motor that moves the speedo needle) in em... I do 2-3 a week in 04s. If its close to warranty you can usually ***** and get em goodwilled as it is a very common problem with them. I would see if they're willing to good will the parts, if not the labor, we do it alot... Otherwise its about $350 for the cluster, and $75 for the labor + tax...

It has about 23000 on it. My deal is I'm new to the Fort Worth area and don't know which dealer is dependable in my area to do the job. How long does it usually take? And Thanks Josh I appreciate you help!!

They usually wanna keep the truck overnight cause they have to order the cluster, it's shipped in overnight with the mileage pre programmed, some will let ya take the truck after they get the #s off of it ot order the replacement, some make ya leave it there... Takes about 30 minutes to swap one out with the reporgramming and all.

Same thing just happened to my wife’s 2004 Hoe last week with only 44 k miles. It finally stuck itself at 120 MPH. I have a friend that owns one of the AC Delco repair centers that refurbishes clusters and radios for Delphi, Visteon, etc. He hooked me up with one of those white faced Silverado SS clusters with a trans temp gauge and programmed it to my mileage. pn 89007468. It turned out real nice. See if I can get some pics later.

I had the same thing happen in my '03. There's a TSB out on this issue. They replaced it no questions asked.
