Re: front axle

From factory should be an open knuckle Dana 44 with drum brakes, that's a 1 year only axle.

Re: front axle

a dana 44 passenger drop front axle is only one cover shape. if the diff cover is a dana 44 then its a dana 44. research pictures of dana 44s. or if you put up a picture we can tell.

Thanks guys now does anyone know where to buy rebuilt kits for these and all the suspension

Re: front axle

How extensive of a rebuild do you want to do?
You can get all the bearings, seals and gaskets from Napa. Buy parts for an early 80s K10.
I know you can get aftermarket poly bushings from someplace like Summit Racing, and I think you can find rubber bushings if you search online as well.

Re: front axle

This is a rather serious overhaul. The "outer" stuff, wheel bearings/seals etc, are fairly straight forward "bolt-on" parts. But it gets a bit more intense after that.
The inner parts like carrier and pinion bearings are not so simple. You can't just replace them and put it back together. There is much more to properly setting up the gears again....and it has to be done or they will fail. It is very important that they be returned exactly to the way they were.
Bottom line is that this is a job best left to a professional.
The biggest enemy to a front end is neglect, which often cokes in the form of water. Pitting of the rollers and races is the most common thing.
