1970 4x4 blazer fuel tank ?
 

Looking for a direct replacement 21 gal fuel tank for a 1970 4x4 Blazer. Seems the tanks I found need the filler neck modified. The original filler neck comes out of the tank horizontal, all the ones I see offered angle up. Any one here know where to buy a tank that does not need to be modified?

I don't think they offer a direct replacement best thing to do is remove you filler neck before scrapping the tank.

Thanks for your input...form what information I have found some say weld the original filler neck to the new tank!? Body mount in the way!

The filler neck has 2 nuts and is soldered on to the tank...you can melt it off if you have a torch set-up or take it to a radiator shop...you can also get some pre-formed hoses and work it that way. That's what I did on mine.
I cut about an inch off the neck.....got some pre-formed 45º fuel filler hosed and a coupler....I made it come out in the correct place to connect to the filler tube on the body....

you have to route them around in front of the body mount to be in the correct location

Thanks A1971Blazer for the information and the photo! I haven't removed the tank yet so your photo is a big help! Best place to buy a new tank With sender and straps???

Most all the vendors have a similar tank...I try to use vendors that are here on the board...GMCPauls is a good place for parts.

Since you still have your tank...I would suggest just having the filler neck moved to the new one...that's the best way....

I just checked out GMCPAULS----Thanks again and I see a POLY TANK MADE IN THE U.S.A.---SOME THING YOU DON'T SEE MUCH---don't know about the POLY but some thing to consider...

I went with a Boyd Welding Tank on my 71 project and will do the same with my 72 2wd blazer - you can pick the Blazer option so the neck is correct, be ready for EFI upgrades, rollover protection from leaking and it is made out of Aluminum.

If it were me, I wouldn't melt it off with a torch, I would probably feel the shock wave in Philadelphia, better to cut neck off with a hammer and chisel, then use tin snips once the hole has been started

There was a thread on here a long time ago about a guy trying to resolder his float bowl, it didn't go well, but was very funny, since he didn't get hurt

A poly tank would be fine...but you will have to use a fill hose method like I described....one thing you wouldn't have to worry about...rust...

If you go with metal....any competent radiator shop can melt the old neck off and back on with no problem...I would think that most people would have enough sense not
to apply flame near a tank that had gas or residual gas fumes still in it....but....you never know...

I appreciate your input...leaning towards the POLY TANK because it is advertised as MAD IN THE USA and no rust...mostly beach riding here...right now I wish I was in your state!

FWIW i bought a poly and ended up selling it and restoring my original tank. Didnt care for the way it fit between the frame rails and the way the straps ran under it.

Where did you get the POLY TANK from? Did it fit to tight or loose--how different from the original tank? Thanks for the information!

All the poly tanks are the same. I bought it from some weird site that had the cheapest price shipped to my door.

I installed the poly tank reusing my stock straps because everyone hates the new straps.

I recall the lips/flange on the tank that seats against the frame rail were too narrow, and it did not have the locating tab that the stock tank did. In general it just didn't feel as secure as I wanted a 20 gallon tank of gas to be :lol:

After taking my stock tank to a shop to restore the install was clean tight and the way it should be.

I did the same thing... Filler is a direct shot from where it drops down from the side... No curve required...

When I melted the old one off my tank it had been sitting empty for a number of years...and it was all rusted out inside as well...
