Camel Hump Heads on a 307???

Can it be done? Would there be any performance gain with putting them on over the stock heads? If so which ones should I put on, casting numbers.

Re: Camel Hump Heads on a 307???

It can be done....use 1.94 intake valve for safe measure. 186 and 461 are 2 good castings, they have accessory bolt holes. Will you pick up any power?? I don't think it would be worth the change.

Most of the time the cost of refurbishing the old heads don't make sence. Vortec heads are cheaper and out perform the camel humps. After market heads are the way to go for performance. I'm sure you've heard all of the"why would you hop up a 307" sayings...so I won't go there...lol

I built up the 283 that came with my truck with camel humps and stuff...with the thought that when I go to a 350 I could bolt on the parts from the 283. Well the parts didn't work well on the 283...and after I had a 1,000.00 in the 186 heads(which I sold for 500.00) I changed all of the parts for the 350.

anyways...make a plan and stick to it...

Re: Camel Hump Heads on a 307???

Well "Spyder-Dude" has some double hump and LT1 heads for sale that he says are "just freshened" I've asked him what that all includes, no response yet, for $200 and $175 respectively. So if they are good heads for that price is there any performance gain over stock? I'm on a real tight budget and won't spend much if I don't have to. I'm just trying to spice it up a bit, and I here heads is the way to go, along with carb, intake, cam, and all that good stuff, but I have that all figured out.

So if you can point me towards a cheap, <$300, set of good heads that would be much appreciated.

I can't imagine your 307 is outbreathing what's already there unless it's pretty darn warm.

Re: Camel Hump Heads on a 307???

Well I'm planning on spicing up the engine a bit and heard that different cylinder heads would really help that matter.

So would camel hump heads or LT1 heads be any of a performance gain over the stock heads?

go for it, I think its pretty kick a$$ that your hoppin up a 307, but you'lle have to rev it up pretty high to make getting s set of heads workwored and ported worth your while because a 307 doesnt flow alot of air due to small cubic inches.

It's still an air pump that can only use so much air. You'd have to spice it up a lot (not a bit) to outbreathe a stock head. Changing cylinder heads on their own will do nothing without changes in the cam, intake and exhaust...and even if you're changing all of that I doubt the heads will be the limiting factor given the displacement. Not to say that a 307 can't be a great engine - it is - but for a bit of spice a good intake and cam swap will give you the most bang for the buck.

I'm planning on putting on a Holley Street Dominator Intake with a holley 4160 600cfm vac secondaries, a new cam, not quiet for sure about all the lifts and duration yet, headers, true dual exhaust. Something like that. And I'm not for sure what stock heads can except in the way of lift, so that is one reason, and having my heads machined and everything probably cost more than I'm willing to pay.

Sounds like a great build! This looks right on track IMHO. For the cam, look for something ~ .450 lift and <= 100# seat pressure. I have some suggestions if you're interested.

Oh yes!!! I will take any suggestions at all on anything. Any recommended cams, carbs, intakes, rebuild kits. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. This is my first build so I'd don't know very much at all.

My 461 don't have accy. holes, keep an eye out I have seen the newer vortec go for $300 a set here. But if you get the vortec remember you have to run a vortec intake as the center holes are different angel

I’ve got a set of reworked cast iron Vortec heads, Edelbrock Comp intake, mild cam, jetted Edelbrock 600 cfm carb and long tube headers on a 307 in my 70 C10 ( all of which I had accumulated over the years except the cam and lifters that were bought new) A real budget build that pulled 300 HP on the best of 3 pulls on the dyno. If you’re happy with that kind of HP it can be done. You can get a little bit more HP but the bang isn’t worth the buck at that point. Small gains at big costs getting anything over 290-300 HP.

Nice, close enough to call it one h.p per cube. I love thrashing on a small sbc

Maybe... some of us are really slow. ;)

Might up the horsepower from 99 to 105.

Re: Camel Hump Heads on a 307???

In all honesty it would probably lose HP. The 307 cam has to be the worst one ever installed from the factory. When they used it in the 400 2v it made something like 190hp. I think the stock heads never met max flow. Even 13 years later.

Why so much hate for the 307? they respond to a head and cam upgrade just as any small block does. Not everyone has to have a 500 hp small block.

So many haters out there. It’s like the only reason they get on here is to just be smart asses! Many people go to these old posts when researching for a project and I’m not real sure the problem with starting them back up.

No hate, just fact. I had a 307 in a 67 and loved it after a cam swap and a qjet swap. In factory trim it just needs alot of help. Now a 262 was a worthless SBC.

I’ll have to agree with you when it comes the 262 sbc. Maybe not completely worthless, it will get you down the road but anyways.
