Truck won’t start
 

My 2002 Silverado 1500 5.3 ran fine this morning. This afternoon I went to start it and it fires like it’s starting then drops dead. Give it gas while starting it nothing let off and it fires up and dies. Won’t run longer than 2 secs any ideas where to start

I would check fuel pressure first . Pump may have just gave up . Not enough pressure to keep it running . Need to rule it out .

There is a fitting on the fuel rail . If you don't have a gauge check with some of the loan a tool stores .

Any good advice on spot to Che k the pressure yeah I ran great70 mph @ 1800 rpms and did great come out 3 hours later it turns over fine hits a firea d drops dead. So I can see where it has enough to pressure up and fill the cylinder but not enough to keep the fuel pressure up to run. Thank you for the advice. There is a tap on the fuel rail I might can check with. Just curious where you normally check at. These are still in the tank correct

That tap on the rail is correct place to check . Unfortunately the pump is in the tank . Not a 15 min job for sure .

Yeah 8 bolts take the bed off and go from there if I remember right it has the sock filter and that’s the only filter they have. We will see

Is there not a fuel filter on the frame just under the cab. I’ve had those plug up on 88s and 96 models. I think my 2001 has one there too. I’d h ave to look.

Out of town until Monday so figure I will look I believe you are right it does have a fuel filter on the frame rail. Figure best bet is to change it and then change oil while under it lol. And see what we got

Fuel filter was plugged. Drilled a hole through filter put back in and ran great. Buying a replacement after work and will replace the old filter

I had this happen on my 88. So I changed the pump not knowing there was a filter. This was years ago. Three days later the new pump failed. The gm dealer towed the truck for me because I was heading to work and changed out the new pump for another one. Told me the pump failed because of the strain from the plugged filter. Lucky for me they only charged me for the filter and labour to change pump. They also gave me a new truck to drive to work while the truck was down. Can’t beat that I guess. GREAT dealer.

Yeah that’s great. It’s a pain to change the filter just location and the gas that falls on you but it’s not too bad to do. Figure after first of the year pulling motor out and upgrading cam to a Texas speed 212/218 and new springs with new tires and front end rebuild then I should have a fun little work truck
