aftermarket transmission crossmembers
Hey guys,
looking for opinions on different trans xmembers that are available. I'm swapping out the original 3 speed for a TH400 and I need one. I've looked at the ones from CPP and ECE and wander what y'all would buy (although I typically avoid CPP). Are there any other options out there? Thanks a lot guys! |

Re: aftermarket transmission crossmembers
I was contemplating this one since I need a parking brake. I ended up not getting it because of price. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=108
EDIT: Sorry about that, it's for a 700R4 |

Re: aftermarket transmission crossmembers
I have read that the frame width remained the same thru the 73-87 trucks. If you feel like gettin your fingers dirty you can probably find something that will work at a dismantler yard.

Re: aftermarket transmission crossmembers
I've never bought an aftermarket trans crossmember. I've always just used an original one from a '63-'87 pickup or Suburban.

Re: aftermarket transmission crossmembers

Re: aftermarket transmission crossmembers
Porterbuilt makes one for the 67-72 for $89 like what I just snapped up http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=563187
I imagine he would make you one for your truck for about the same |
Re: aftermarket transmission crossmembers
My truck crossmember is straight across so I opto to run muffler through the outside of frame. The Ebrake cable runs inside the frame. IMO sometimes it's better something To buy already fabricated vs. Paying to get it fab. I don't have welder.

I bought a pre-made crossmember with the e-brake mount and added to it. Made just for our trucks.
*http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=108 I canalbized the old crossmember parts from it. Used clevis pins, cotter keys, drilled, bent and made a brass bearing. I didn't use a spring. I have springs on each side on my rear disc brakes. Mocked up clears my 4L85E just fine. Yes I do have a powdercoat problem, my son suggested a 12 step program for me. |

Thanks |
Re: aftermarket transmission crossmembers
There is no welding necessary, just drilling some holes. How many depends on what trans you are installing as some of the factory holes in the frame may line up.

I have a 1965 GMC shortbox with a 230 motor. I have two scenarios in mind. Could you answer some questions I have about them please. The first is a 700R4. 1. The first cross member back from the motor mounts has to be removed. 2. I have to fit in a another cross member to support the rear of the transmission, 73-87 or aftermarket. 3. Will the transmission fit under an low hump floor 4. If I put in an aftermarket support, how do I make sure the transmission is level. Use a level on the intake manifold? I plan to take a loop off of the coils in the front, to drop the nose a little 5. With a 700R4, I have to pull out the motor and transmission as a unit, as they support each other The second is a NV3500 or NV4500 6. I keep the first cross member back from the motor, so I can support the bell housing. 7. Will the transmission fit under an low hump floor 8. Is it difficult to setup the hydraulic clutch system. Another question about power steering, I see that you sell an adapter. What year of truck should I be looking for, to get a power steering box ? Any other suggestions or ideas you may have about this swap, are greatly appreciated. |
Re: aftermarket transmission crossmembers
here is what the stock 64-66 a/t crossmember looks like
http://imageshack.us/a/img39/7137/im...1206250745.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img13/3072/im...1206250745.jpg the 700r4 will fit under a low hump with a little work to the seam that protrudes down from where the floor meets the firewall if you ca nm mount a standard trans to the orig style b/housing that mounts to the orig crossmember you are fine. if you use a later or a/market b/housing that doesn't mount to that c/member then you will have to install a rear trans mount c/member. if you install a 700r4 you should remove the old bellhousing c/member and install a rear mount one. you can drop the a/t without having to remove the engine. bolt in that rear crossmember so that it can be either dropped or slid back to ease removing an a/t if it ever has to be done. If removing an a/t in this style of application always remember to remove the distr cap so that it doesn't get broken when the rear of the eng drops a hair when you take the tranny out. you can't go wrong with the capt's steering box mounting plate ron |
