Make my own LED tail lights
 

I would like to make my own LED tail lights on a circuit board. Does anybody here have experience with doing that and who can share what the manufacturer and part number of the LEDs are, where to get them, and how many of them together on a board will approximate a stock bulb brightness or a little brighter?

I saw that one a while back and had forgotten about it. I will have another look and see if I can figure out what LEDs specifically he ordered, and order some for myself.

I was unable to get any useful information about the manufacturer, part number, or legitimate source of the LEDs. I am starting from scratch, ordered some generic superflux LEDs off of eBay. So, I will see when they get here if they are useful, or if they just need to be chucked in the trash and try again.

I didn't feel like spending a hundred US dollars for a LED conversion kit like LMC sells for example, or doing it from scratch.

My favourite local auto wrecking yard has tons of parts to turn into LED tail lights. I made my own conversion using a pair of LED arrays from the high-level brake lights from a couple of SUV's. Kia or Hyundai, or some such brand.

I ran into some trouble trying to use those arrays as both tail lights and turn/brake lights, so I ended up using them solely for the turn/brake lights and added some LED strip lights down each side of the inside of the lens for the tail lights.

I made the new lights plug-n-play by making plugs out of the bases of 1157 bulbs so they could easily be removed if needed.

Good idea. I don't have a junk yard to go to here. I would like to order what I need online. I can't buy the arrays like that without knowing the actual make/model/year they come off of. Can you tell that information, or perhaps a part number off of the assembly?

It was six years ago that I made those. I found two identical SUV's that had the high-level brake light inside the rear hatch window. They are easier to get out than the ones that are mounted on the outside of the vehicle. Plus they are designed to shine through the dark tinted glass, so they are nice and bright.

I think they were Hyundai or Kia vehicles. Sorry, but that's about all I can remember.

I found some info on the lens. It looks like they came from a 1999 Hyundai. The re is a number 92750-26 on them and SAE U3 99 DOT Korea and the company initials HMC. That's all I got.

That is great info. Searching for "Hyundai Santa Fe stop lamp 92750-26" shows they are from 2001 to 2006 model years and available for about $40 to $55 each used. They do look very good to use in our trucks.
