Truck bed - order of assembly

Before removing the body of my 60 C10 long bed step side, I restored the bed with new wood. I was told that as a beginner, it would be easier to keep it square to not remove both bed and bedsides at the same time.

Now, the painter wants to assemble the bedsides off the truck with the rear cross member welded to the sides like it was before, paint it, then I put it on the truck. Do I have to remove the bed to get the bedside assembly on? The chassis is completely rebuilt/restored and ready to go.

You don't need to weld the rear crossmember to the sides. The weld is just for the production line. Once everything is bolted, it will be fine. Tell him to paint everything, then just put it together. Here is a bed we did from scratch, all new parts, and home made hickory.

Thanks Rocknrod. It looks like I have to take the bed apart. Oh well, what else do I have to do? :banghead:

That looks amazing!! Plus, I noticed you built it standing up. I put all 108 bolts on laying under the truck!! Now I know how to do it an easier way!

Yep, I did my first one on my back. By myself. That was a ... mistake. You will need a bunch of strong guys to lift it when you're done, though.
