Here is the right gages for your '81-'87. These are hard to come by. But not cheap.

after being schooled, I'm in the wrong, lol...I don't have a tach, so I didn't know a diesel wouldn't rev that high...sorry for cluttering up the thread...

the font change in 80, and the cluster is a direct fit for 80-86, it wont work without mods in an 87 due due the vss on the speedo

That ticks me off. I had one on there couple weeks ago and got $71 out of it. Was the older font which I'm sure is the reason. I need to find more of these.

As for the tach in an 87, I used my original 87 cluster, cut a small hole in the back for the back of the tach, then used all the 87 gauges but the fuel and clock, swapped circuit boards and stupid me sold it with the truck.

The gasoline trucks came with 5K tachs, I believe the diesels were 4k.
5K in a stock diesel is gonna create schrapnel :devil:

FWIW, the 78-79 tachs(with blue accents) are the same mechanically/electronically, just need a font change.
Both the blue and orange tachs are easily repairable and you can re-calibrate them to make them more accurate.

Were the diesels ever offered with a tach? In straight trucks I know they were, our '82 Topkick with a CAT 3208 has a tach and it goes to 4K.

Personally, even for a gasser, I think a 5K tach is plenty, I usually only take my "close to stock" engines to 4K, sometimes slightly higher.
Also, I believe they offered a tach with the I6 engines, and I think it was a different tach. Good luck finding one!

Buddy has a bunch of big trucks behind his shop I need to go look at. If these things are bringing this kind of money, I need to jump on this bandwagon.

Yea, "untested" appears kind of a "key" word, at least to me.

I like having a tach and would really like one for the c-30 as it is geared so low, would rather drive with one than the speedo, but...for $200 plus for an "untested"? Seems a bit :crazy: to me too!

I bought 2 clusters in Jan 10 for 30 bucks. One is a tach dash with mech oil gauge, sounds like I got a good deal, will post pics later.

yea, you did get a deal, but the newer ones are a lot rarer than the older ones.

I would read this "untested" as non working. In the past when I was buying and selling these there were a bunch out there that were listed as untested. There is no reason for this. All you have to do it plug it into a running trucks distributor. Crazy someone would pay that much for it untesting. I have gotten $315 out of one on Ebay before but it was a fuel/tach.

That is the word on the street.
I have both, I'll try to take some pics to show the difference.
The older ones have the electronic components encased in some sort of plastic.
I haven't figured out how to remove it yet, but I haven't tried very hard yet ;)

any body know if there are seperate tach and small gas guage reprodutions like the guages LMC sells? i have the catalog for my '84 but these guages aren't offered in it... are they offered in another catalog?
