Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
My brother sent those photos this weekend because I will not be able to get there till this weekend!!!.....He said it's got all the original stuff on it still:metal: That 6 banger's got over 128,000 miles on it and sure needs a refresh....thinking of going to a 302:D
As you can tell the headliner is falling out and my bro said it smelled a little mildew-ey, so we must of been taking on water at some point:( Hope the floors aren't too bad....it has been a NC car all it's life though, so maybe nothing terrible!!! My parents stopped driving it in 1982, but we have lugged this 'stang everywhere we've moved over the past 20 years....and I am sure glad they did:lol: Dad said he had it painted back in the 70's, but obviously it's strating to peel....my bro says only surface rust that he sees on the outside...we'll find out more when the disassemble starts...... |
Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
Looks good Geoff!, hurry up and start the restore!
|
Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
I had a couple old Ponies, a '68 Coupe & a '69 Convertable. The 69 was my car as a senior in high school. I loved that thing.

Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
Man, you suck. I think we should trade cars. I have more rust in one quarter than you have in the entire car!

Went up and started removing the interior to see just how bad it was....found lots of mice nests to start off with, but none of them stuck around for the restore:D
It's been an NC car all it's life, so things weren't too bad on the floor, kick panels, trunk area, and back seat areas....the roof had some surface rust too....the drivers door had some rust on the outside front corner and about midway back along the bottom outside lip....the driver side rear quarter has some rust through as well,,,, Dad informed me that the car actually has 229,000 miles on it....yikes, but hey not real bad for over a quarter million miles!!!:metal: Dad also gave me the protecto plate and owners manual showing where my Grandmother purchased the car for my Mom on 9-6-1966 |

Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
Yup, somebody's butt definitely bent the roof AND the brace!
Looks friggin great man. That's VERY minimal for those cars. |
Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
Looks like a good start. Has a few hiccups, but nothing time and money won't fix.

Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
So Geoff, when do you realistically think you'll start on the car?
I have to build a shed (NO room in the garage to work :( ) buy a compressor, welder, and rotisserie. I'm hoping this winter. |

I think we are gonna try to do the passenger floor pan and rust encapsulate and seal the rest on the interior....it really isn't all that bad???....Or we might get it all blasted and primed to get a true assessment of what we are up against inside and out...can I borrow your rotisserie?:D |
Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
Sweet, I wasn't sure if you were just trying to get good pics or if it was "game on."
I'll probably get one in about 6 months... then my car will be on it for about... ohhhhhh, 2 years... you'll be done by then  |

My brother knows a couple of mustang guys in town...we are going to talk to them about a rotisserie and engine/tranny combos too.... |
Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
cool car and history geoff. Its pretty solid and looks like the floor is solid other than pass. side, like you said maybe just clean and encapsulate . have you been under it ?these cars are known for rusting out in what I believe is called the torque box? or whatever they call them . anyway congrats and good luck with the project.

Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
Thanks Dwayne....haven't been able to get the car on a lift yet (brother doesn't have power to it)...but we intend on checking it out under there too the next time I'm up there....yikes!!!...hoping it's not real bad!!!:D

Went up yesterday and removed the front fenders, hood, side trim, grill, etc....took some pics with the camera phone...not too good, but here they are....
Fenders were in great shape....just a small spot on the driver side under the trim piece, the battery apron/ box area was eaten up pretty bad, but was expected, the grill was in great shape, but the front valence was bent up and dented pretty bad...Dad says it was from a lady backing into him....bumper was junk (as you can see from previous pics)..... Next up is cleaning up the cowl (the Crazies at Ford don't give you any simple way to get in there....so we may have to "oil can" it to make sure they are ok...lots of leaves in there....hoping for the best (this could be a $2000+ repair if it is trashed!!!...YIKES!!!)...gotta get the engine and tranny out too....more to come |
Re: Mama's High School Grad Present-66' stang
My first "cool" car was a 66' Drop Top with a 4 speed, 289 and the pony interior. I miss that car dearly. An injected 5.0 will fit nicely inside that engine bay, and shouldn't break the bank. Remember, the 302/5.0 can be stroked out to 347 ci pretty easy....in case you just wanted the ole carb thing too. Being more of a Ford fan than Chevy fan (yeah, I know...I've never bought a Chevy, I'm here cause one was given to me) I love Mustangs. Very cool cars! From the drivers seat, the hood feels like you could land airplanes on it...
