Truck has been in Tucumcari New Mexico it's whole life. Has zero rust. Owner says it runs, but it didn't have a battery in it. No big deal really, I'm planning a duramax swap. lol

Do you plan to leve it as a wrecker or do something else with it? Paint or rust?

Probably not what you're thinking of but it'd look pretty cool as a wrecker but lowered with polished Alcoas. Just my $.02. Best, Dan

awesome. i almost bought one similar but would have cost to much money to have towed to my house and a lot of work to fix it up. love the look of the old tow trucks though

That works as you aren't going to be doing away with a nifty old name brand wrecker body in the process.

If you want to run a stock frame rather than doing a frame swap they did have 1-1/2 and 2tons in 1953 with 179 inch wheelbases that might stretch a bit rather easily. No vin on the frame so finding that truck in a Texas field with the beat up cab, no engine and missing pieces but a nice straight frame works if a stock style frame is in the plans.

OMG damn that is cool. I would have a real hard time not leaving it stock. If I was wealthy I have always said I would love to have a collection of "working cars" and trucks, I love stuff like that.

If you need two of them there is a pretty nice 54 tow truck sitting on the main drag in Woodward OK. Have not checked the price but looks pretty clean from the road

It's either getting a duramax or cummins. My dad has a 94 12V Cummins 2wd dually work truck on the farm he said I could have. It would be hard to pass that up as a swap donor, as it's free!

I actually got the truck running this weekend, but the carburetor is pouring fuel. Every gasket in it is toast. I'm gonna chunk another carb on it and go cruisin. lol

If I decide to use this chassis, this one looks like it will stretch rather easily. I haven't decided if I'm going to use this chassis, or swap it onto a newer 1 ton chassis. I think putting the body on a new chassis would be easiest.

you are in luck here, the project and builds section has some cummins swaps you can look over. the cummins is a very long engine and will come through the firewall to at least the dash, also very challenging to get enough cooling in the stock rad location, but it has been done!

I'll definitely be checking them out! Luckily my dad donated one of his ranch trucks for the build! It's a 94 Ram 3500 Dually. Looks like it's getting a 12v Cummins and 47RH trans. I'm most likely going to body swap it to the dodge chassis, and stretch it.

Cool build. The ditymax would have been a much better fit in the engine bay, but that 12-V Cummins is hard to beat for simplicity and reliability (and power if you want to go that route). Really hard to get a radiator big enough for the diesel, plus an intercooler and A/C compressor under the hood. And the Dodge frame is going to be way wide for that body so it's tough to get the tires under the fenders. I chose to narrow my frame (and steering, and rearend, etc.) but I got the tuck I wanted. Anyway, I'm tagging along for this one. Don't drag it out 4 or 5 years like I have!

Gonna be cool..I agree would habe been real nice with a d-max..

2slow..he's got a 4100 so his front end is wider longer and taller than your 3100..cabs are the same..still gonna be tight squeezs but thatll help going on the full size chassis

Mongo - that's good to know. The firewall and floor mods on mine are extensive. Hopefully his fits better. 12V or Duramax, either way it will be badass.
